When temperatures rise from around five degrees Celsius and especially in rainy weather, the first amphibians dare to leave their winter quarters.
The BUND Nature Conservation therefore asks all road users to be considerate and would like to encourage volunteers to help.
Memmingen/Unterallgäu - The animals ready to reproduce are now migrating en masse to the surrounding waters.
That's why numerous volunteers from BUND Nature Conservation are out and about on the roadsides in these weeks, checking the fences in the morning and often in the evening and bringing the collected animals safely to the other side of the road.
Until the end of April, you have to expect amphibians on our roads or people who are out and about in the morning and evening hours to protect them.
A total of 16 protective fences have been set up.
Around 200 volunteers look after the transitions for over eight weeks.
Last year, around 17,300 common toads, grass frogs and alpine newts were saved from dying on the roads in this way.
More towns - helping hands are welcome
Two new areas for protective fences were added this year: the towns of Klosterbeuren and Woringen.
The BN would like to see the important work on species protection continue in the future.
The people helping are getting older, so the BN is hoping for more.
Volunteers from the younger generation.
Volunteers are still urgently needed to help actively, especially at the new collection points in Klosterbeuren and Woringen.
The toad collection has already begun in Eisenburg, and municipal measures are being taken at the western entrance to the town with a toad fence and speed limits.
Volunteer toad collectors from Eisenburg and Memmingen look after and check the collection containers twice a day.
The children of the forest kindergarten take on this important task in the morning hours on weekdays.
The maximum permitted speed in the area is limited to 30 km/h.
Other places where protective fences have been set up and volunteers can be found are in: Sontheim, Bad Grönenbach, Bad Wörishofen, Frickenhausen, Heimertingen, Mindelheim, Irsingen and Lautrach.
