A legacy project

On the occasion of this launch, Beyoncé gave an interview to

Essence

magazine , aimed at African-American women.

She explains in particular the origin of the project which she says she “received as an inheritance, and which is probably the most anchored in (her) ancestral roots”.

“It’s much more than just a business,” insists the singer.

Hair is our lineage, it’s our family’s history.”

If Queen B claims to have “many beautiful memories linked to (her) hair”, it is mainly because her mother, Tina Knowles, once ran her own hair salon.

But that's not all.

“From my childhood spent in my mother's hair salon, to my father applying oil to my scalp to treat my psoriasis, these moments were sacred to me,” she confides again.

It is in homage to all this that the 42-year-old singer decided to name her skincare range Cécred, which is therefore the contraction of the last syllable of her first name, “Cé”, and “sacred” which means “sacred” in English.

“Black women are the last to be included in the tests”

Cécred is certainly a very personal project for Beyoncé, but it is also very political, in that it aims to fill a void in the hair market for textured hair.

“Black women in general are the last to be included in the tests,” she explained.

We are often prescribed things based on studies that we have not participated in.”

For Queen B, this project is therefore “more important than (her) or the hair”.

“Today we've created something that celebrates hair health for all women, including us,” she says.

I am always honored to invest in us.”
