From increased funding for the clean energy transition, particularly in emerging and developing economies, to enhancing the next round of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) that countries make under the Paris Agreement.
These are some of the key actions identified during the meeting of energy and climate leaders from around the world organized by the International Energy Agency (IEA) in Paris on "After Cop28", to move from promises to facts and on the next steps that the governments must undertake to meet the energy commitments made at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai, the IEA announced in a statement.
In his opening speech, COP28 President Sultan Al Jaber noted that "trillions" of dollars are needed to finance the promises made in Dubai to limit global warming, adding that "finance is the key factor".
"The next Cop has the task of obtaining a new collective objective. And now that the objective of 100 billion (a year, ed.) has finally been achieved, the world must raise the bar".
IEA director Fatih Birol pledged to work closely with the COP28 presidency, as well as with Azerbaijan and Brazil, which will host COP29 and COP30 in succession.
In particular, on monitoring and reporting of COP28 commitments, in collaboration with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), on supporting countries in developing the next round of NDCs and helping to develop solutions to provide greater financing for transitions towards clean energy, particularly in emerging and developing economies.
Birol also announced that the IEA, as happened last year with the preparatory meetings with the COP28 presidency, will launch a series of meetings in collaboration with the COP29 presidency.
