- The security situation in Latin America has changed in recent years.
Ecuador had very low crime rates despite its proximity to Peru and Colombia, which suffered from the activity of powerful guerrillas, such as the Shining Path or the Farc.
Ecuador was an island of peace in an area marked by violence linked to drug trafficking.
But, in general, the region has been very criminogenic for years.
It has the highest homicide rates in the world for a long time.
It is in Ecuador that the situation has experienced the most terrible deterioration.
The fear is that this deterioration could spread to other countries with the connections between different organized crime groups.
For example, in Chile, crime rates have increased significantly.
This may be associated with the mass migration of Venezuelans for several years, such as in Peru
