Why is Türkenstrasse actually called Türkenstrasse?

A spokesman for the municipal department explains the background to unusual street names in Munich.

Munich – There are over 6,800 streets in Munich.

A few principles apply to their naming (see info box below).

Some signs are so popular with Munich residents that thefts occur again and again.

The naming of the streets is now the responsibility of the municipal department.

Our editorial team asked how some rather unusual names came about.

A spokesman for the municipal department was able to help with information from the database.

The selected streets are those that were named before 1996.

Explanations of all streets named after 1996 can be found on the state capital's official homepage.

Principles for naming streets in Munich:

No streets are named after living people.

Names that lead to confusion with existing street names, give rise to misinterpretation or ridicule, or cause contempt for residents may not be used.

New street names should, if possible, have a common factual reference to existing names in the area (e.g. poets, composers, “Franzosenviertel”).

This also makes it easier to find roads.

Street names are used for orientation and should therefore be as short, simple and easy to understand for locals as possible.

Names that are difficult to understand phonetically or are long and prone to spelling errors are unfriendly to citizens in everyday use and should therefore be avoided.
