The last few months have left serious marks on the trees and forests in the urban and forest areas of Weilheim.

This is due to the extreme weather that hit the area in December and January.

But upcoming conversion and renovation measures also mean the end of many a tree.

Weilheim - The heavy snowfalls and storms that Weilheim and the Oberland experienced in winter did not leave their mark on nature.

Private property owners see this in their own gardens.

But the city of Weilheim also regrets the significant tree damage that required workers to use the saw.

During today's building committee meeting, the Weilheim municipal utility company presented a list of damaged trees, all of which had to be felled.

The list includes ash, pine, fir and even oak.

“Some of the trees were so damaged that we had to cut them down for traffic safety reasons,” reported Manfred Stork from the Weilheim building authority.

But that's not all: in the future, trees, some of which shape the cityscape, will also disappear.

We are talking about three maple trees that stand along Prelatenweg No. 5 in Weilheim near the secondary school.

Although there is no storm damage here, one of the trees is already badly damaged in the root area and the other two trees also have damage in the trunk and crown areas, according to the district advisor for horticulture and land conservation, Heike Grosser.

Strong reactions expected

The Weilheim building authority cited the upcoming reconstruction and renovation work at the secondary school as the reason why the maple trees now have to go.

Part of the renovations at the school included work to fix the dampness in the basement.

Excavator and truck work will be essential for this.

This also means that the trees cannot be protected from the intensive work.

In this context, the city is expecting strong public reactions to the deforestation of the trees.

That's why the building authority wanted to clarify early on why the measures had to be taken.

As a small ray of hope, the office offers the prospect that the three trees will be replaced by four new trees once the work is completed.

In general, the members of the building committee see an urgent need to rejuvenate the tree population in the district.

More tree damage

A pine tree at Anton-Lieb-Straße 3 in Weilheim also has to go.

According to the building authority, this tree was also extremely damaged by the snow load in December 2023.

The tree grows on a previously undeveloped plot of land that is part of the “Zugspitzstrasse - South” development plan.

The building authority fears that the pine tree could fall onto the street.

Although the building committee was extremely reluctant to agree to the felling, the decision came with a condition.

The tree must be replaced within the next five years.

Call for tree protection regulations

A very recent incident also heated up tempers.

Residents on Bärenmühlweg in Weilheim are still horrified today after the unannounced felling of an ash tree on undeveloped private property (we reported online).

The work, which neither the neighborhood nor the city of Weilheim had any idea about, is increasing the call for a tree protection ordinance for the city.

According to the German Nature Conservation Association, this regulation prohibits it

namely, removing, destroying, damaging or significantly changing the structure of protected trees.

The Federal Nature Conservation Act offers the possibility of placing the entire population of trees, hedges or other landscape components under protection in certain areas.

However, there is no such regulation in Weilheim.
