Children whose parents are addicted have a much higher risk of becoming addicted themselves.

Prop Freising draws attention to a special week of action.

Freising

- “Children of addicted parents are the largest known addiction risk group in Germany,” explains Beatrice Brinninger, systemic therapist and employee of the Prop advice center in Freising: “An estimated 2.65 million children have alcoholic parents, 40,000 to 60,000 have parents who are addicted to illegal drugs.

Their risk of becoming addicted as adults is up to six times higher than that of children from non-addicted families.”

The nationwide campaign week for children from families affected by addiction, which is currently taking place until Saturday, February 24th, draws attention to this.

Beatrice Brinninger continues: “In order to offer both children and people with addiction problems a perspective and points of contact, the Freising specialist group “Shoulder Closing”, which was founded in 2017, is creating structures with which those affected can be supported and supported.

We look after – just like youth welfare – a lot of addicted people who have children.”

The Freising specialist group is trying to provide very concrete assistance and achieve a change in attitude on various levels.

To give an insight into the life of a client who comes from an addicted family, became addicted himself and has his life back under control thanks to the help from Prop, Beatrice Brinninger spoke to Marc B. (name changed), who works at Prop im Assisted living (BEW) lives.

Addictions: Action Week wants to raise awareness

Mr. B., what was your path to addiction like?

About my father.

He went to breakfast every weekend to play cards and I accompanied him.

At some point, when I was about 17, I started drinking.

Even at work - I drank with work colleagues.

You have an addicted father.

How did you perceive this as a child?

My news

My father drank, my mother didn't.

There were arguments very often.

When I was about eight years old, my parents' arguments increased.

The mother then expelled the father from the apartment with the help of the police.

What did that mean for the family?

The separation of my parents when I was 13 was terrible for me.

And the family's disunity also resulted from this situation.

I was more loyal to my dad and was his favorite, my brother was more loyal to my mom.

The cohesion in the family was no longer so good, and there were also arguments among the three of us.

My mother had to work even more.

We were very poor, which made her more irritable.

Marc, do you know questions like: “Is it my fault that my mother or father drinks too much?”

No I do not know.

Alcohol addiction affects the family: “I was only able to meet father at the inn”

Or have you ever asked yourself, “Do my parents care more about alcohol than I do?”

Alcohol yes – definitely!

I was only able to meet father at the innkeeper's.

Despite the massive physical consequences of alcohol, he continued to drink.

He died at the age of 54.

What would you have wished for as a child or do you wish for now?

Harmony in the family.

I am now older than my dad.

I've been getting along better with my brother and my mother for about six months now.

I now visit her again on public holidays and ride my bike to see her.

The visits are more harmonious.

What was an important insight for you in retrospect that is still relevant today?

I lost a lot because of my drinking: my job, my friends, my existence.

What helps you stay stable today?

There are a lot of things: distraction, cycling, repairing bikes, rebuilding, going to Prop's contact and meeting place or doing yoga in courage are among them.

I also think a lot about how I can live cheaply.

That's why I go to the warming room to eat or to the contact and meeting place for social contacts, for example, so that I don't have to eat alone and save money.
