In Gröbenzell, an Asian tiger mosquito was confirmed for the first time in the Fürstenfeldbruck district.

The discovery was reported by the LGL.

Gröbenzell - In Gröbenzell, an Asian tiger mosquito was confirmed for the first time in the district.

The local discovery of the exotic mosquito species, which is increasingly spreading in Germany as a result of climate change across southern Europe, was reported by the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL).

Detection of the Asian tiger mosquito in Gröbenzell: Prevention and containment of the insect - simple measures help

The mosquito, which originally comes from Southeast Asia, can transmit pathogens (e.g. Dengue, Zika or Chikungunya viruses) in these latitudes.

According to experts, there is no health risk in this country: The transmission of tropical diseases is currently considered very unlikely because the climatic conditions do not (yet) exist.

However, unlike many native species, the tiger mosquito is also active during the day and can be very annoying with its aggressive biting behavior.

Ideally, the spread of the Asian tiger mosquito should be prevented or contained.

The key is to prevent the insect from laying eggs and thus from reproducing.

Important to know: Tiger mosquitoes only lay their eggs in standing water - the smallest amounts in flower saucers, bird baths or clogged gutters and watering cans are enough.

The flight radius of the Asian tiger mosquito is only about 200 meters, so these control strategies are generally recommended:

- Avoid water accumulation, for example by emptying coasters, grave vases and bird/hedgehog waterers weekly

- Seal rain barrels and cisterns (e.g. close-meshed mosquito net, lid)

- Remove or turn over unused outdoor containers (e.g. buckets, watering cans).

Spring is recommended as the first time for the measures to prevent the first generation of mosquitoes from laying eggs, ideally throughout the summer.
