“According to the Ministry of the Interior, there are between 2,600 and 3,000 mosques in France. However, we do not have 3000 trained imams. And a whole generation is going to retire,”
worries Saïd Aalla, president of the Grand Mosque of Strasbourg (GMS), completed in 2011 by the Italian architect Portoghesi, a stone's throw from the historic center of the city.
However, since January 1, in line with Emmanuel Macron's speech at Les Mureaux in 2020, France has rejected “detached imams”, these preachers sent by Algeria, Turkey or Morocco.
As of April 1, the approximately 300 currently on French soil, some of whom have been singled out for radical preaching, will have to be paid by religious associations, and no longer by their country of origin.
Once again, the question of their training in France is therefore raised.
