(by Ida Bini) In the year in which Spain confirms itself among the best tourist destinations for those who choose sustainability, Valencia obtains the recognition of 'European Green Capital' for the first time.

The title was awarded by the European Commission, which recognizes Valencia's efforts to improve the environment and the quality of life of citizens and many tourists with the increase in green spaces and various mobility initiatives for getting around and visiting the city.

   The rich program of events, demonstrations, meetings, debates and projects, with over 400 activities planned throughout the year and which will involve all citizens, is a tribute to the almost 5 million square meters of greenery that occupy the Spanish city between parks, gardens, trees and gardens.

   The city is located in a privileged enclave, overlooking the Mediterranean, surrounded by La Huerta, 120 square km of orchards and vegetable gardens that supply markets and restaurants with 0 km gastronomic offerings, and characterized by natural and protected areas such as the Albufera park, just 30 minutes from the centre, an oasis for the thousands of birds that frequent the wetlands every year.

And, again, the Turia Garden, an impressive 9 km route of gardens, sports and leisure spaces that crosses the city right where the Turia river once flowed.

Added to these green spaces are hidden corners for romantic walks such as the Monforte gardens or new spaces such as the Central park, which will add 230 thousand square meters of greenery to the city.

Going up the Turia river you enter the Turia natural park, more than 8 thousand hectares of Mediterranean forest to explore on foot, by bicycle or on horseback.

These itineraries are the protagonists of the new guide 'Itineraries in the greenery of Valencia', a manual which contains the objectives of this year's European Green Capital, as well as 4 nature routes - Rio Verde;

A Center to share;

The huerta, the sea and the Albufera, the streets of the city;

La Esencial - easily accessible to all.

   The city's commitment to sustainable mobility is also strong, promoting the use of public transport, bicycles, scooters and walking.

In the city, in the surrounding area and on the beach, you can easily move by bus, bus or bicycle along the 160 km of cycle paths or within the 94 square km of pedestrian zones, including the new spaces in Piazza de la Reina, Ayuntamiento Square and Brujas Square between the Central Market and La Lonja.

The presence of the vegetable garden around the city also allows you to eat 0 km 0, very fresh products, which can be found in the stalls of the Mercato del Grao, the oldest in Valencia, recently renovated, but also in the new temples of gastronomy in the centre, such as the Mercado de la Imprenta or Mercader, in the Cabanyal neighborhood.
