Alleged street art works are circulating on social media.

But this never existed.

Photos of several house walls in Munich were manipulated.

Munich - When facades have to be used for political propaganda: A graffiti showing the ultra-conservative US television journalist Tucker Carlson circulated on social media in February 2024.

Carlson can be seen with his middle finger extended in the direction of US President Joe Biden.

The photo was allegedly taken in front of the Ukrainian embassy in Berlin.

However, the apartment building in the photo is not in the German capital.

But in Munich.

And the alleged graffiti doesn't exist and didn't exist there at all.

Reporters from the

German Press Agency (dpa)

, who looked around on the relevant street corner in the Giesing district, came across an unstained wall.

There was no sign of a fresh coat of paint, as the reporters reported.

They were also able to rule out recent cleaning due to the dirt in the joints.

House wall in Munich used for fake picture - resident: There never was graffiti

“Fakes can be a simple way to reinforce certain positions,” explains Pia Lamberty in an interview with

dpa

.

She works for the Center for Monitoring, Analysis and Strategy (CeMAS), which, among other things, deals with disinformation and conspiracy theories on the Internet.

Similar fake images have already spread on social media in the past.

At the end of 2023, another house wall in Munich suddenly received unusual attention.

On an apartment building in the Berg am Laim district, an image of a man in orange dungarees removing a blue and yellow Ukrainian flag with a high-pressure cleaner was said to have been seen in the style of the British street artist Banksy.

A key goal of disinformation is to cause discord and chaos and to cause destabilization.

But here too, a site visit revealed that the alleged picture was never seen there.

A resident and member of the owners' association assured the

dpa

that there had never been such graffiti in the area in question.

“A key goal of disinformation is to cause discord and chaos and to ensure destabilization,” says Lamberty, explaining the intention of such posts.

Photographed walls in Munich: Alleged images cannot be found on site

According to the CeMAS expert, anti-Semitic fake depictions of Stars of David in ovens have also been circulating.

According to t-online

research, there was a connection to the so-called doppelganger campaign - a pro-Russian network of real-looking but fake news sites.

Images of areas in the Hasenbergl district of Munich were used.

More fake graffiti from Munich can be found on social networks.

Some of the walls photographed for this purpose are only a few steps apart.

Just a two-minute walk from the wall of the Carlson fake, another Giesinger residential building was photographed.

A depiction of Ukrainian President Volodymyr was then placed on this surface

Zelensky photoshopped in clown costume.

In the immediate vicinity, an empty facade was used for alleged graffiti showing a mountain of corpses caused by Ukraine.

The side wall of a garage in the Ramersdorf-Perlach district was used for a fictional painting depicting the Ukrainian president as a rat.

In these cases too, the alleged images could not be found on site.

The Munich police have not received any reports of graffiti or graffiti on the streets in question in recent weeks, as the

dpa

reports.
