“Today is not about political discussions,” said Thomas Reddig on Monday evening in Cap Sounio.

Around 70 old town residents met there to describe their experiences with the current Monday demonstrations.

And to collect signatures to “review and/or ban the entire use of vehicles and all devices that disturb the peace” at these demos.

The complaint is addressed to District Administrator Thomas Eichinger and Mayor Doris Baumgartl.

The reason for the residents' gathering: the volume of the Monday demonstrations: drummers, honking cars, trucks with horns, a large loudspeaker with a tape announcement in an endless loop.

In addition, the traffic jams caused by the demonstrators are causing increased emissions.

The demo last Monday was quieter than the previous Mondays.

Only one drummer, fewer trucks and the band announcement seemed quieter.

In addition, the demonstration did not lead through the old town, but along Neue Bergstrasse.

It is questionable whether this is a reaction to the already clear anger of the residents.

The organizer Rolf Kron had said that he would always take different routes, which the district office publishes on Fridays.

“Against noise and aggression”

Co-initiator of the meeting of residents Alexandra Högner described complaints from her own experience and from conversations with others: Hotel and catering establishments such as Goggl, Mohren and Hexenwirt complained about a lack of customers on what were actually good Monday evenings before the loud demonstrations.

Shops would close earlier, including offices, because telephone calls, for example, would not be possible due to the noise.

Children are scared, adults are stressed.

Some of the demonstrators behaved aggressively towards passers-by.

In addition, the huge tractors and trucks in the pedestrian zone are dangerous.

“We have nothing against a demonstration, but we have nothing against noise and aggression,” said Högner.

Hermine Eicke pointed out the disruptions to mass on Monday evening in the city parish church.

The service recently had to be interrupted because of the loud demonstration, as Sepp Wörsching told her.

An architect also pointed out possible damage to the structure of the listed old town caused by the heavy vehicles.

However, it cannot be proven whether the gas pipe that was damaged in Schlossergasse can be traced back to this.

The politicians’ mandate from voters

The fact that the demonstrations were approved in this form was “unbelievable,” said Reddig.

“It is absurd how Baumgartl and Eichinger are ducking away.” After all, as mayor, Baumgartl has “a mandate from the voters.”

The first priority for her should therefore be the dialogue with District Administrator Eichinger.

Memmingen has also issued a general decree regarding the current protests.

For example, this prohibits front loaders on tractors and sets a minimum speed for the vehicles.

However, this only applies to meetings that are “not reported or not reported in a timely manner,” as can be read on the city of Memmingen’s website.

But the police union is also calling for a ban on tractors during demonstrations.

A member of the ADFC, who had registered a children's demonstration, quoted from the district office letter with the requirements: The volume of the megaphone should be adjusted so that "only those directly attending the meeting are addressed and passers-by and residents are not involved more than is avoidable under the circumstances." .

Members of the Licaria carnival association also reported that it was unbelievable how many forms they had to fill out to approve the carnival floats.

And two people would have to walk next to each carnival float to prevent accidents.

In general, those present criticized the district office's waving through of the Monday demonstrations.

It was strange that the organizer only had to announce the route by email on Friday.

The usual cooperation discussions would probably not be held.

Manuel Stede from landsbergbleibtbunt reported on them.

During their demonstrations during the Corona protests, they sometimes had to “hold discussions in front of 15 officials.” Stede, however, appealed not to rely on the authorities, but rather to “take a position” yourself, for example through banners.

What an opponent of the Monday demonstrations had apparently already done: The banner hung on the bridge over the new Bergstrasse: “Honk if you are a Nazi.”

The list of signatures for the complaint is available in the Hexenturm and the Mohren until March 8th.

The initiators then want to submit the complaint personally to District Administrator Eichinger.
