The end of the “Starlight” cinema makes many people in Weilheim sad.

The small film theater in the city center has to close in the summer because the homeowner wants to create offices there.

A comment on this.

Certainly, with the nationally important “Kinocenter Trifthof” and its five screens, Weilheim is still well supplied when it comes to film enjoyment.

And yet it is bad news for the district town that Weilheim's second cinema, the “Starlight”, has to close.

This charming little film theater in the middle of the city center has been bringing a special touch to city life for decades: with its fine selection of films beyond the blockbusters, with its family atmosphere, with film discussions, regular director visits and extraordinary series such as the “Agenda Cinema”.

Even and especially a not very young audience feels at home here, appreciates the easy accessibility and the selected program.

The “Starlight” in Weilheim was a stroke of luck

It's a stroke of luck to have a cinema like this in the middle of the city.

This happiness was only possible thanks to a passionate operator, thanks to loyal visitors and, for a long time, thanks to a homeowner who liked having a cinema on his property.

The fact that all of this will soon be a thing of the past and that offices are to be built there is a shame - and a painful loss for the cultural city of Weilheim.

And the fact that it is not the general decline in visitors (which is noticeable but manageable) that is killing the “Starlight”, but rather the logic of the real estate business, is what puts the bitter crown on this sad story.

Hopefully other cinemas will be spared such “unhappy endings”.

Whether Weilheim's “Starlight” can still be saved seems more than questionable.

Hopefully at least other smaller cinemas in the area – the “KinoP” in Penzberg, the “Lagerhaus-Kino” in Schongau or the “Kurtheater” in Tutzing – will be spared such or similar “unhappy ends”.

The most important prerequisite for this is probably this: we should visit the cinemas as often as possible.
