On video: the meeting of the committee for the selection of judges/Roni Knafo
At the end of the meeting of the committee for judicial elections that took place today (Tuesday), ten judges were appointed to the district courts in the north and Haifa.
Minister Levin and Judge Amit were silent for most of the meeting and did not speak, not even among themselves.
The one who spoke a lot at the meeting was Minister Orit Struck who asked to refine procedures and to understand what data the committee members receive about the judges before they vote on appointments, especially regarding the appointment of Arab judges.
Another member of the committee said that "Minister Struck said illogical things without substantiation. She wanted to take candidates off the table, but that is not what is decisive."
Minister Orit Struck said to Walla!
Because the discussion is not about the appointment of Arab judges, but about judges who do not judge nationalist events harshly. "There was an important discussion today, judges were appointed by consensus," Struck said.
"I said in the debate that I am not against the appointment of Arab judges, my position is that I am against the appointment of judges who make light of events such as guarding walls and it does not matter if they are Jews or Arabs."
Strock detailed about judges that in her view there is a problem with their appointment, and detailed about the significance of the "Wall Guard" events in her opinion.
"I objected to the appointment of Judge Tal Tadmor Zamir (Deputy President of the Peace Court in Haifa, BA) because she made light of rioters in the wall guards," Struck said.
"My position is that, in general, judges who influence the fine fabric of Arab relations with the State of Israel in their rulings should take their role into account. I stated that now since October 7, the Arab society in Israel is behaving in an exemplary manner and those who do not know how to respond like wall guards, in my opinion, do not deserve to be promoted and influence the reality in Israel"

Although today's meeting was defined as substantive and even judges were appointed, next week it is expected to be a rather stormy meeting as Minister Levin wants to appoint Judge Ron Solkin as the president of the district court in Be'er Sheva, while the judges oppose it.
According to a member of the committee, the position of the judges is that there will be no such thing.
The meeting will take place next Thursday.
In a joint announcement by Judge Uzi Fogelman and the Minister of Justice, Yariv Levin, it was stated that the committee is unanimous on the appointments, and at the next meeting to be held on February 29, 2024, the committee will discuss, among other things, appointments to the magistrates' courts.
In addition, they said that the members of the committee received an update from the director of the courts on the information provided in the case of a judicial candidate who is being investigated by the Israel Police.
At the current meeting, they said goodbye to Ilana Seker, a representative of the attorney's office on the committee, the person who will replace her and who has already arrived at the meeting today is attorney Yonit Kalmanovitz.
