The Senegalese Constitutional Council published on Tuesday February 20 an updated list of presidential candidates similar to a previous list, except for one competitor, thus appearing to cut short demands for re-examination of the pre-electoral process.
A document authenticated by AFP to the Council only takes note of the withdrawal announced Monday by Rose Wardini, one of the two women presidential candidates, who announced that she was withdrawing from the race due to information about her dual French nationality. -Senegalese.
Otherwise, the document includes the same 19 names whose candidacy the Council had validated in January.
Senegal was then heading towards a presidential election on February 25.
The calendar has since been disrupted by an unprecedented sequence in Senegal's post-independence history, during which President Macky Sall and the National Assembly announced at the last minute the postponement of the election before being retried. by this same Constitutional Council.
Strong quarrel
Last week, the Council vetoed the postponement and maintenance of President Sall in his post until the installation of his successor.
The Council noted the impossibility of maintaining the presidential election on February 25 and asked the authorities to organize it
“as soon as possible”
.
President Sall said on Friday his intention to respect the decision of the Council and to carry out
“without delay the necessary consultations”
for the organization of the vote.
The Senegalese are now waiting to know the new date.
The sequence of events triggered a new and heated dispute over the holding of the presidential election before or after April 2, the date of the official expiration of President Sall's mandate.
But the dispute also concerns a restart from scratch, or not, of the process which saw the Constitutional Council approve 20 candidacies in January.
