Gauting – This Tuesday morning (February 20th) nothing happened again on the Munich - Tutzing railway line.
The reason was an accident at the underpass at Pippinplatz in Gauting.
At around 8.30 a.m. a truck crashed into the bridge and severely damaged the roof of the railway underpass.
When driving through, the driver misjudged the height of the bridge.
The same accident occurred at the 3.30 meter high S-Bahn underpass on April 18th last year.
A year ago, like today, train traffic had to be stopped completely.
Due to a truck accident at the underpass in Gauting: the S-Bahn and train route Munich - Gauting is closed for two hours
While in last year's accident the driver (41) initially tried to escape, in today's case the 46-year-old truck driver from Unterschleißheim immediately contacted the Gautingen police on his own initiative and reported his mishap.
Accordingly, he damaged the ceiling of the railway underpass with his truck while driving through towards Pippinplatz and also tore a traffic sign at the entrance with the height marking out of its anchorage.
After their arrival, the Gauting police patrol immediately closed the tunnel to car traffic.
The emergency manager of Deutsche Bahn was then notified, who in turn initiated a closure of all rail traffic from 8:45 a.m. to 9:55 a.m.
Only after the accident manager had finished his assessment of the accident site above ground and underground was both train traffic and car traffic reopened.
In the meantime, the Gautinger construction yard had removed the damaged traffic sign at the entrance to the tunnel.
In contrast to last year's accident, the impact on inner-city traffic today was limited, which was probably due to the time and day of the week.
Because the accident on April 18, 2023 happened around 4 p.m. on a Friday afternoon.
The emergency manager at Deutsche Bahn estimates the damage to his company, primarily due to the downtime, to be around 50,000 euros.
No information can be provided about the material damage to the truck because its roof could not be examined.
