For the Seeblick youth center, the cliffs have become threateningly close.

Therefore the building will probably have to be demolished.

Travemünde – Four meters is not enough in this case.

It is precisely this distance that separates the Seeblick youth center from the cliffs of the Bay of Lübeck.

Since the end of January a tree fell on the edge of the escarpment and left a hole in the narrow and now closed hiking trail between the house and the bank.

Youth center directly on the Baltic Sea before demolition: cliffs only four meters away

That's why the building, which has hosted youth groups since the 1950s, no longer has a future.

“The house has to be demolished, we are in negotiations with the city about how that will happen,” reveals Renate Paulien-Wittmaack from the youth organization “Socialist Youth of Germany – The Falcons” to the

German Press Agency (dpa)

.

In addition to 25 beds and leisure options such as a barbecue and football field, the accommodation also offers a unique view of the Baltic Sea, which is practically on your doorstep.

In 2011, “Die Falken” acquired the youth center located between Lübeck-Travemünde and Niendorf - at that time, the bank was still twelve meters away, even at its closest point.

Since then, the edge has been steadily getting closer; according to the Schleswig-Holstein State Office for Coastal Protection, National Park and Marine Protection (LKN.SH), one meter breaks off every year due to rain, wind and sea.

The organization's hands are tied because the Brodten cliff is located in a landscape protection area.

Nevertheless: The end for the youth center comes sooner than expected.

The 2024 season was actually already planned.

“We were already fully booked from March up to and including October,” emphasizes Paulien-Wittmaack on

NDR

: “The groups and clubs should now receive notice in good time so that they can look for other accommodation.”

The 67-year-old continues: “On February 6th we inspected the house again and didn’t discover any cracks or damage.

From our point of view, the building is intact.” The decision-makers apparently saw it differently.

No future for the youth center on the Baltic Sea: the furnishings and stained glass windows should continue to be used

The city of Lübeck does not want to support further use without an expert opinion.

According to a decision from the building inspectorate, this should be available by the end of February.

This schedule cannot be adhered to for “The Falcons”.

“The experts said that they would not prepare a report until April at the earliest because the storm season would then be over,” says Paulien-Wittmaack, reporting relevant contacts.

The youth organization doesn't want to wait that long: "Then we don't know what the outcome will be and whether we can continue." Because the experts, whose work costs 100 euros per hour, could also give their thumbs down.

As a result, the dismantling of the youth center must now be planned with a heavy heart.

Everything should be cleared out soon.

After all, the plan is to keep the furnishings and the stained glass window above the front door, which shows a white falcon on a blue background, for future projects.

Meanwhile, Bild

Youth center no longer safe enough: “I feel sorry for the young people”

What seems certain, however, is that young guests will never set foot in the building again, which affects Paulien-Wittmaack for various reasons.

“I feel sorry for the young people for whom we have done this all these years,” she regrets the loss and points to a problem that the groups are now facing: “Finding a short-term alternative is difficult and, above all, expensive .

Young people should use their money for their leisure time, not for rent.”

It is already a serious blow for children and youth work in and around Lübeck, “because it is the last self-sufficiency house in Lübeck”.

The building was unique not only because of the special view - and will be missed all the more.

After all, it will likely remain a popular photo motif until his last day.
