Warship with a breakdown: The “Bonn” under frigate captain Eike Deußen suffered engine failure during a NATO mission.

In the middle of the NATO operation, the engine at the naval supplier “Bonn” suddenly failed.
With engine failure we went to the shipyard in Warnemünde.
Kiel/Warnemünde – Since the beginning of the year, the “Bonn” has been in use in the NATO mission “Very High Readiness Joint Task Force Maritime” on the so-called northern flank in the North and Baltic Seas as well as in the North Atlantic.
But then it happened: engine failure.
“Due to damage to the drive of the supply ship, repairs became unavoidable,” said the Bundeswehr.
So the “Bonn” went to the shipyard.
The incident is one of a number of failures - be it Germany's government aircraft, in which windows cracked and tires burst, or the "total failure" of the "Puma" tank which broke down.
The largest German warship was repaired in the Warnow shipyard in Warnemünde.
At least the damage was repaired within two weeks.

The damage that had occurred could only be repaired in a dry dock.
However, on the coast of the Baltic Sea there are only two shipyards designed for the size of the “Bonn” (174 meters long, 20,000 tons displacement) - these are in Kiel and Warnemünde.
However, the dock in Kiel was already occupied by the sister ship “Berlin”.
So the “Bonn” went to the naval arsenal in Warnemünde.

However, the fuel that was carried had to be handed in beforehand.
But where should five million liters of diesel fuel go?
In the fuel tanker “Spessart” at the Kiel naval base: It was quickly used as an interim fuel storage facility for up to 9,000 tons of fuel.
The repairs were carried out quickly at the Warnow shipyard in Warnemünde.
Now he is heading back to his NATO area of operations after refueling in Kiel.

Unlike the most powerful German warship, the frigate “Hessen”, the “Bonn” was not designed as a supply ship for active attack.
The only armament on the ten-year-old ship is the Navy's operational group supplies (EGV) with four MLG 27 naval light guns and four heavy machine guns.
In addition, mobile flying fists are carried.
The “Bonn” with its home port in Wilhelmshaven was put into service in 2013 and has a crew of around 175 soldiers.
The commander is Frigate Captain Eike Deußen.
The ship supplies operational units at sea with all the necessary resources: fuel, food, material and ammunition.
As a multifunctional ship, like the other ships in the “Berlin” class, it also provides special medical capacity and satellite-based communications technology for command tasks.

Two Sea King and Sea Lion marine transport helicopters also provide support for mobile flight operations.
The transport capacity of the task force supplier includes 230 tons of provisions and the same amount of ammunition as well as 9,500 cubic meters of fuel.
The “Bonn” also has more than 1,300 cubic meters of fresh water on board.

As part of the NATO mission “Very High Readiness Joint Task Force Maritime,” the “Bonn” is part of NATO’s so-called rapid maritime reaction force.
During the NATO operation, the Bundeswehr supplier “Bonn”, together with units from Italy and Spain, is said to be keeping an eye on Russian units.
Incidents from the recent past show that this is necessary: At that time, a Russian super submarine was smuggled through the Baltic Sea - the federal police saw the convoy near German territory.
The German Air Force also intercepted four Russian aircraft over the Baltic Sea.
Exactly where the “Bonn” is going is secret for tactical reasons.
However, since the association is part of the major NATO exercise “Steadfast Defender 2024”, Norway is likely to be the future focus of “Bonn”.
