"In the city council, decisions are made about our daily life, about the education of our girls and children, about the public space, the infrastructure, where a synagogue will be built and where a playground will be built. Does it make sense that these decisions will be made mainly by men?"
Says Yael Yehiali, founder of project 5050, a Jerusalemite activist.
When she started her activity, she discovered that one of the reasons why there was a minority of women in the councils was that many lists were arranged so that men were in the first places and women in the last, less realistic places.
And so also when women ran for the city council they did not enter because they were in the unrealistic places.
During the last year, she and her team established working groups throughout the country with the aim of creating as many research lists as possible - man woman man woman, or vice versa woman man woman man.
And now, on the eve of the 2024 elections, we are heading for elections in which there is a record number of women candidates in real places.

There are a number of cities where the numbers there are particularly striking - in Haifa there are 14 research lists, in Ramat Gan there are 10 lists, but also in places like Efrat there are 5 research lists and in addition in the settlement of Efrat and Givat Shmuel and also in Or Akiva all lists have contestants and none List excludes women.
"I think that in these elections we will see a change in some of the cities and councils," Yehiali says, "of course now the public needs to vote only for egalitarian lists, but the basis with which we will start these elections is a good start.
