The Freising train station has not been usable for people with reduced mobility for weeks: both elevators to the platforms are broken.

The mobility officer in the district, Konrad Weinzierl: “That’s tragic.”

Freising

- It was a request that was asked for the second time in a Freising committee.

After Ulrich Vogl drew attention to the problem of broken elevators a few weeks ago, this time it was Guido Hoyer: “Is there anything new about this?” he wanted to know, after the two elevators to the platforms were still broken, and after He was told that it would probably take until May until the damage was repaired.

If the elevators don't work again until May, says Hoyer, "then the Freising train station would not be barrier-free accessible for four months."

Mayor Tobias Eschenbacher explained that the city had already contacted Deutsche Bahn several times about the matter and tried to emphasize the urgency.

“Unfortunately, we can’t do more, but we’re sticking with it.” According to Susanne Günther, nothing has happened so far “because spare parts are missing and cannot be delivered,” as she said.

Representative for the disabled: “That’s an absurdity”

The representative for the disabled in the Freising district, Konrad Weinzierl, was dismayed by the situation at the Freising train station.

It is absurd that a train station is not barrier-free accessible for months.

According to Weinzierl, the issue of accessibility “is not a top priority” at Deutsche Bahn, something he has had to experience several times: He reports on conversations with a representative of Deutsche Bahn in Hallbergmoos: The train station there is not barrier-free, “ “They’re blocking things,” says Weinzierl.

And in Freising too – “as hard as that may sound” – people are at the mercy of Deutsche Bahn when it comes to accessibility.

“This is tragic.”

Signage leaves a lot to be desired

The signage at Freising train station is also tragic for those affected: the elevator that leads to the basement does not indicate that the two elevators to the platforms are broken.

The result: wheelchair users, parents with strollers and everyone who relies on an elevator can get to the basement, but they are unable to get up to the desired platform.

Elevators are not repaired at the same time

When asked by the FT, a railway spokesman said: “In fact, the two elevators in Freising are currently out of service.

The frequency converters in both systems are defective.” Since, according to the spokesman, elevator failures have “increased recently,” Deutsche Bahn has decided to extensively test and modernize the systems.

In concrete terms, this now means that the relevant work on the elevator to platforms three and four is already underway and “is expected to be completed by the beginning or middle of March”.

Then it will be the turn of the elevator that takes train passengers to platforms 1 and 2 - which is expected to be operational again in mid to late March.

When asked why both were not repaired at the same time, the railway spokesman replied: “We are currently working on several elevators in the greater Munich area and cannot be everywhere at the same time.

Therefore, we can unfortunately only modernize the two elevators in Freising one after the other and not in parallel.” Work on the first elevator could only have started this week “because we had to wait longer for the necessary spare parts.”

When asked about the lack of signage, the spokesman said: “We are expanding the notices on site and adding them to the station building and the access to the working elevator.” That should happen on Wednesday.
