Renault is reviving an old aircraft model with a new SUV.

The name corresponds to a French fighter jet and the propulsion technology is impressive.

Boulogne-Billancourt/Munich - Dassault Aviation's Rafale is a multi-role fighter aircraft designed in the 1980s that has been sidelined in recent years.

However, given the geopolitical situation, the fighter jet, which has since been modernized several times, is experiencing an upswing.

According to

Flugrevue.de,

the French Air Force is being completely renovated with numerous aircraft of this type.

But the model name is not only omnipresent in the air: At the same time, a namesake is setting out to conquer the streets of the world: the SUV range is being expanded by a model that bears the same name: the Renault Rafale crossover.

This is no coincidence:

Appropriately, the presentation took place at the Paris Air Show.

Although the manufacturer Renault is a pioneer in e-mobility and has been offering electric cars for many years with the Twizy and Zoe electric cars, the Renault Rafale is not available as a pure electric car:

Instead, the combination of gasoline and electric motors is part of the recipe for success.

The new Renault SUV comes as a full hybrid crossover with 200 hp and efficient consumption figures: The Renault Rafale E-Tech Full Hybrid has a WLTP value of just 4.7 liters per 100 kilometers.

The special feature of this drive is also evident when it comes to the range of the super gasoline engine with the help of the electric motor: the rustic hatchback coupe should be able to drive up to 1,100 kilometers without having to stop at the gas station.

In addition to the integration of Google services, the French car innovation has another special feature with the Solarbay panoramic roof: It is based on liquid crystal-based PDLC technology and can be made opaque or transparent if desired (by voice command or by pressing a button).

During the presentation, Renault explained what motivated the brand to choose the unusual name: The fact that the Renault Rafale takes its name from the French fighter jet is only half the truth.

Renault also has expertise in aircraft construction - historically speaking

On the one hand, both companies have had a partnership for many years.

In addition, according to Renault, it has owned the naming rights for “Rafale” since 1936.

From the mid-1930s, company founder Louis Renault also manufactured airplanes after taking over aircraft manufacturer Coudron.

The devices then produced under Coudron-Renault had model names with different winches - including the C460 Rafale machine (German: “gust of wind”).

And at what prices is the Renault “fighter jet” available for the road?

The purchase costs start at 44,760 euros, with the higher equipment at least 48,760 euros.

Meanwhile, a study about electric cars vs. used combustion engines dispels a myth.
