Stiffer administrative sanctions for illegal and undeclared labor and the recriminalisation of procurement offenses are among measures being considered by the government in a bid to improve workplace health and safety in Italy after a structural collapse at a supermarket underconstruction in Florence last Friday left five workers dead and three more seriously injured, sources said on Wednesday.
The new package may also regulate coordination between public prosecutors on investigations into workplace health and safety-related crimes.
The measures, which were reportedly announced at the end of acabinet meeting during which Labor Minister Marina Calderone briefed her colleagues on workplace safety in Italy, are expected to come before the government at its next meeting.
Meanwhile, trade unions and employers' associations have been summoned to Palazzo Chigi for separate meetings to discuss the issue of workplace safety on Monday morning.
