Two Ukrainian junior basketball players died after a knife attack in Oberhausen.
Many people from North Rhine-Westphalia and abroad are horrified.
Oberhausen – In Germany, Artem and Volodymyr hoped for protection from the bombs in their homeland.
The Ukrainians were close friends and played basketball together in the U19 Bundesliga.
But now they were torn from their lives far too soon.
A 15-year-old is said to have stabbed her in Oberhausen.
There was nothing more the doctors could do for Volodymyr; the 17-year-old died that same night during an emergency operation.
Artem (18) initially had hope that he would survive the brutal attack.
But he also succumbed to his serious injuries on Tuesday (February 20).
Many people are stunned.

“We are deeply shocked, mourn and say goodbye to another great basketball talent from our own ranks,” writes the basketball club of the two Ukrainians, the ART Giants Düsseldorf, on Facebook.
Since the violent act in Oberhausen, Artem has been in the hospital in the intensive care unit.
After the attack, the sports club announced that the 18-year-old had survived and wished him a speedy recovery.
But recently his condition had become increasingly worse and on Tuesday (February 20th) Artem died at the age of just 18.
“Like Vova, Artem was extremely popular with teammates, coaches and friends and everyone had nothing but positive things to say about him,” said the ART Giants.
In addition to his talent and commitment in basketball, he was known above all as a joyful, humorous and open-minded person - including his teammate and his friend Volodymyr.
Their friendship showed “how important human connection and community interaction are in our lives.”
Artem and Vova will forever be remembered and carried in our hearts.

Düsseldorf's mayor Stephan Keller (CDU) also mourns the loss of the two Ukrainians.
The deaths of Volodymyr and Artem caused “pure horror and absolute disbelief,” Keller is quoted as saying in a city post on Facebook.
“The fact that two boys who sought protection from us against war against their homeland were torn from their lives in such a brutal way makes me sad and angry at the same time.” The thoughts of the administration of the NRW state capital are with the relatives Ukrainians and the many supporters who recently donated to the families.

Accordingly, Artem and Volodymyr tried to avoid the argument on the night of the crime.
Nevertheless, the fatal attack occurred.
“As a father, I wouldn’t wish this on anyone, not even my enemy.” The Ukrainian Basketball Association speaks of a “terrible tragedy” on its website.
Sincere condolences are expressed to Artem's family.
