The Hamburg Elbtower was intended to be the crowning glory of Hamburg's Hafencity.
Then construction came to a halt, and now a large tenant is pulling the ripcord.
Hamburg - A major tenant has left the Elbtower in Hamburg.
When asked on Wednesday, the Hamburg Commercial Bank HCOB confirmed to the German Press Agency that it had already “withdrawn in accordance with the contract” from the rental agreement for office space in the Elbtower in January.
“We decided to withdraw after the construction stop on the Elbtower became known and the further development of the entire Signa group of companies was subject to significant uncertainty,” the statement said.
Since the bank is in full business operations, it must have appropriate office buildings at all times - this security is currently no longer available at the Elbtower, according to the HCOB.
Several media outlets had previously reported on the bank's exit.
The Elbtower is intended to be the crowning glory of Hamburg's Hafencity.
However, the construction site has been at a standstill since the end of October.
At a height of 100 meters, the contracted construction company stopped work because the Signa Group of the Austrian real estate entrepreneur René Benko did not pay bills.
The owner of the property and indirect subsidiary of the insolvent Signa Prime Selection AG is now also insolvent.
Elbtower Immobilien GmbH & Co. KG is listed on the official list of insolvency notices.
