The Loriot exhibition recently opened in the municipal gallery in Geretsried.

The works of the famous humorist can be seen there until March 10th - some of which are family property.

Geretsried

- It was already on display last summer in the house of the Art and Nature Foundation in Nantesbuch, and then in the Hollerhaus in Irschenhausen.

The Städtische Galerie on Elbestrasse has been showing the exhibition “Loriot” since Thursday.

Although a little late, Vicco von Bülow alias Loriot would have celebrated his 100th birthday in 2023.

But the great German humorist can also be remembered later, said Assunta Tammelleo at the opening.

The chairwoman of the Isar-Loisach cultural association brought the caricature show to Geretsried together with the city and with the support of Albrecht Widmann.

The themes of the exhibition are very current

The original drawings from the 1950s and 1960s, some with handwritten comments, come from Loriot's daughter Susanne von Bülow.

The Art and Nature Foundation packed them in pretty maple wood frames.

Some of the cartoons were published in the magazine “Quick” under the section “The Completely Open Letter,” while others show people in the vast field of nature.

The topics are still – or are again – very relevant.

The picture in which a married couple sits on the beach and watches the sunset, not in real life, but as a live recording on the television screen, is reminiscent of today's bad habit of just staring at your cell phone in the middle of the most beautiful landscapes.

The series about “Allotment Gardener Bernhard” or “Dealing with Moles” are delicious.

Also typical of Loriot is the Christmas tree seller who holds out the bare skeleton of a fir tree to a couple with the words: “This one doesn’t needle at all.” Or the “new products from the inventors’ fair”: A drug apparently causes flies to grow to a grotesque size, so that you... can easily hold on to one leg and catch her.

Caricatures as reflections of society

Some people will recognize themselves in the caricatures, which are always reflections of society, said Mayor Michael Müller.

Self-irony was one of the trademarks of the famous illustrator, author, actor and director, who lived in Ammerland near Münsing from 1963 until his death in 2011.

The municipality of Münsing also loaned the city two original sketches of its honorary citizen.

He made one on the occasion of an anniversary for the Münsingen fire department, another as a thank you to the local council for putting a stop to the building frenzy in his residential area.

Furthermore, plastic and bronze figures as well as posters from the von Bülow family and from private collections complement the small, fine show in the municipal gallery.

A poster of television dog “Wum” hung in Wolfgang Hildebrand’s stairwell for over 50 years.

The 82-year-old from Geretsrieder is pleased that the work is now being honored once again.

“If a lover is interested in it, I’ll sell it to him too,” he said, himself, in his own words, an “ardent Loriot admirer.”
