Highlights: Hohenpeißenberg parish church is asbestos-free after 63 years. Instead of stone slabs, aluminum shingles adorn the approximately 2,100 square meter roof of the building. Church caretaker Ernst Schmidhuber was therefore “very satisfied” when clear changes to the roof became visible in late autumn. Only 15 percent had to be raised by the parish and the archdiocese of Munich-Freising with the remaining 85 percent donated by the community. The cost of the work was around 1.5 million euros alone.

It was only towards the end of last year that the parish church in Hohenpeißenberg was allowed to take off its temporary steel cladding again.

Almost four years ago, the “Resurrection of the Lord” church was diagnosed with asbestos disease - the result was lengthy work that has now been completed.

- The result of a report that the roof panels used in the construction of the parish church were increasingly releasing dangerous asbestos made waves almost four years ago.

Uncertainty quickly spread due to the kindergarten, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the church.

Air measurements were then taken at eight locations.

Then came the relief: the horror scenario didn’t happen.

No signs of asbestos in the air – at least for now.

Not alone with the asbestos problem

However, the church in Hohenpeißenberg was never alone with the asbestos problem.

In countless buildings from the last century, the building material that was previously celebrated as a “miracle fiber” is making itself felt in an unpleasant way.

Although the Archdiocese of Munich-Freising described the matter as a real “emergency,” it was still almost a year and a half before the renovations began.

In addition to the lengthy search for the suitable material, the increased construction and material costs in particular prevented the renovation from starting earlier.

Temporarily, attempts were made to help by sucking out the carcinogenic substance.

Slate was initially discussed as a replacement for the asbestos-containing roof panels, but was soon ruled out due to its heavy weight and the lack of meaningful plans for the building's statics.

Today, instead of stone slabs, aluminum shingles adorn the approximately 2,100 square meter roof of the building - and fortunately, they exert less weight on the statics than the old cladding, explains Pastor Robert Kröpfl.

Not stone slabs, but shingles

In May 2022, things got down to business quickly and without any significant incidents.

Church caretaker Ernst Schmidhuber was therefore “very satisfied” when clear changes to the roof of the church became visible in late autumn.

The positive interim conclusion of those responsible at the time was that the company worked “completely accurately”.

After the main building, people moved over to the bell tower and shortly afterwards it disappeared behind a special scaffolding structure.

The temporary steel cladding of the tower was used at the same time for another parish project: the golden cross was also to be given a new shine.

A special crane was used to carefully transport the 400 kilogram tower top from its airy base to the ground.

The important religious symbol received its fresh coat of paint in Gaißach.

After the cross's return, there was only a little remaining work to be done before the church could finally be freed from its steel cladding, reports Pastor Robert Kröpfl.

“Everyone worked together really well,” he sums up.

Even when the parish church got its freshly gilded top back, everything went smoothly.

Previous fears that static problems, especially on the bell tower, could lead to further work in the future, “have been happily resolved,” says Kröpfl.

The costs also “remained within the calculated range”.

However, Hohenpeißenberg did not have to raise the considerable sum of around 1.5 million euros alone.

Only 15 percent had to be raised ourselves.

Much to the joy of the parish, the archdiocese came to their aid with the remaining 85 percent.

Pastor Kröpfl was pleased that the citizens were also satisfied with the “aesthetic” appearance.

The result of the renovations “has been well received”.

“People who know a little more about roofing also say that the work was done cleanly,” he said, praising the end result.
