In Italy, to date, the national coverage of protected land area is 6,530,473 hectares, equal to 21.7% of the national territory.
Approximately 4 million hectares are the protected surfaces at sea, equal to 11.2% of Italian territorial waters and ZPEs (Ecological Protection Zones).
The EU's objective is to protect at least 30% of the land surface and 30% of the seas by 2030. To achieve this target, there is a gap of a further 19% of marine surface to be protected and of approximately 8 %for the terrestrial part.
