Marseille ranked in the top 3 of the least clean cities in Europe, with barely more than 20% of Marseille residents surveyed considering themselves satisfied with the health and hygiene in their city.

As reported by

France Bleu

, for many years the inhabitants of this district located in the northern districts have witnessed a vast deterioration of their living space, in particular due to the accumulation of waste on public roads.

The fault lies in garbage dumpsters filled to the brim and saturated daily by jets of waste which are intensifying.

“In my neighborhood, there are 680 inhabitants.

Everyone pays their tax for garbage collection, compared to only two traders.

The others use the containers dedicated to household waste as they wish and it overflows.

“It’s unacceptable that they don’t have their own trash can

,” she whispers.

A new waste collection service provider in April

These waste distribution problems, combined with difficulties in collecting trash as denounced by local residents, have led the neighborhoods concerned towards an untenable situation.

“In the Saint-Antoine district, there is poverty.

You have to see it to believe it.

We are completely abandoned

,” continues Anissa Cheurfa, explaining that last January she even contacted a project manager from the metropolis, competent on this subject, to come and see the extent of the damage.

“She had the trash removed quickly afterward, but I can’t call her every time.

It’s been continuous for several months

,” she emphasizes.

Faced with the lack of change and the lack of reaction from the garbage collection company, several CIQs in the 15th arrondissement of Marseille are threatening to contact the rights defender to alert the highest level about their situation.

“We are going to bring together all the associations for a meeting with the CIQ confederation and put together a file with photos district by district

,” promises Anissa Cheurfa, explaining that she has received no feedback from the service provider responsible for collecting garbage.

The situation could nevertheless change for residents of La Viste and Saint-Antoine, with a new rubbish collection company being called upon to replace the current one from April 1st.

In the meantime, neighborhoods are still drowning in waste.
