Highlights: In Italy, according to research by the Energy & Strategy Observatory of the Milan Polytechnic, there are around 85 collective self-consumption configurations. The objective is to reach at least 15,000 energy communities with a significant impact in terms of environmental benefits and savings on electricity bills. In fact, Cers represent a new entity for energy markets. In defining this new legal entity, the legislator wanted to entrust the final consumer with a central role in the energy transition. More and more technology for the Cers, the renewable energy communities, which "represent a macro process for the energy transition that requires digital models and tools".

This is what emerged from the workshop organized by CEI, the Italian Electrotechnical Committee, and SopraSteria on the constantly growing phenomenon.

In Italy, according to research by the Energy & Strategy Observatory of the Milan Polytechnic, there are around 85 collective self-consumption configurations: 61 groups of self-consumers and 24 energy communities, and in the next few years the objective is to reach at least 15,000 energy communities with a significant impact in terms of environmental benefits and savings on electricity bills.

During the course of the work, it emerged that it is essential to have advanced design tools.

In fact, Cers represent a new entity for energy markets.

In defining this new legal entity, the legislator wanted to entrust the final consumer with a central role in the energy transition and in achieving the challenging decarbonization objectives that our country committed to achieving during COP 21 in Paris in 2015.

The package of measures launched leaves the consumer free to produce and sell energy independently.

Widespread self-consumption is recognized and valorised, also opening up the possibility for the Cers to carry out other activities not linked solely to the production and consumption of energy from renewable sources, to provide their members with environmental, economic and social benefits.
