But he didn't register with the lottery.

The actual winner had 180 days to redeem the ticket.

But as Florida Lottery confirmed to

, the deadline passed on February 11, 2024 without anyone claiming the winnings from the August 2023 drawing.
This is despite calls for the lottery playing population to check their lottery tickets.

After all, the million-dollar winnings do not flow entirely back into the lottery's coffers.
“Florida law requires that 80 percent of unclaimed prize money from expired tickets be transferred directly to the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund,” a Florida Lottery spokesperson told

Thus, educational institutions in Florida benefit from the forgotten lottery jackpot.
A large portion of the summer will be used to support schools, universities and scholarships.
The remaining 20 percent of the sum, however, flows back into the prize pool, the lottery reports.
