Because of the high wind speeds, the wind turbines could also be smaller. The Feldberg is the largest ski area in the country and the habitat of many rare animals and plants. That's why it was placed under nature protection in 1937. This year, the green-black state government wants to build 100 new wind turbines in the southwest. Only 16 new turbines with a total output of 62 megawatts were built last year.

Politically they are wanted, but in practice plans for wind turbines often fail because of local residents' protests or because of nature conservation issues.

But is the Feldberg suitable for this?

The mayor says yes.

Feldberg - The mayor of the municipality of Feldberg in the Black Forest considers the 1,493 meter high Feldberg summit to be a suitable location for wind turbines.

“That would have a great symbolic effect and would show that we are serious about the energy transition,” said Johannes Albrecht to the “Badische Zeitung” (Wednesday).

Due to its height, the Feldberg has optimal wind potential.

Wind probability describes the occurrence or yield potential of a certain area in relation to the wind blowing there.

Studies have shown that two to three wind turbines at the summit would generate a similar amount of electricity as 15 in the lower area, Albrecht told the paper.

“Before you destroy the entire region, it would be better to build a few wind turbines in exposed areas like the Feldberg.” In this way, the entire ski area could be supplied with green electricity.

Since the summit is not forested, there is no need to clear any forests.

Because of the high wind speeds, the wind turbines could also be smaller.

As Albrecht additionally said in response to a dpa request, the community has so far had loose contacts with energy companies.

Look at another Black Forest mountain, the Hornisgrinde (1164 meters).

There are plans to build a second wind turbine there.

This year, the green-black state government wants to build 100 new wind turbines in the southwest.

According to the latest information from the Ministry of the Environment, only 16 new wind turbines with a total output of 62 megawatts were built last year.

Originally, Green-Black agreed in the coalition agreement as the goal of creating the conditions for the construction of 1,000 new wind turbines in the country by 2026.

But this goal was conceded again.

The Feldberg is the highest German mountain outside the Alps and is one of the most popular excursion and hiking areas in the Black Forest.

At the same time, the Feldberg is the largest ski area in the country and the habitat of many rare animals and plants.

That's why it was placed under nature protection in 1937.
