Kaja Kallas finds clear words at the traditional Matthiae meal: The West must definitely support Kiev in the Ukraine war and stand up to Putin.

Hamburg – Eastern Europe seems more worried than ever after the death of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny.

Estonia's Prime Minister Kaja Kallas expressed alarm at the Matthiae meal in Hamburg last Sunday (February 20).

Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the Estonian Prime Minister were invited as guests of honor to the traditional banquet.

Kallas found strong words in her speech: “Together we can help Ukraine win this war.

We have the resources, the economic power, the expertise,” said the 46-year-old.

Because of torn down monuments: Putin puts Prime Minister on wanted list

According to reports from

NDR

, the Estonian woman has been on a Russian wanted list since last week because she caused old Soviet monuments to be torn down.

Kallas justified the decision by saying that the monuments have become a “source of increasing social tension” and that the “threat to public order must be kept as low as possible,” as quoted by the

Tagesspiegel

.

The banquet was also attended by Olaf Scholz and, as is tradition, the mayor of Hamburg, Peter Tschentscher (SPD).

Tschentscher praised the Prime Minister at the beginning of the meal.

“Prime Minister Kallas is an important supporter of Ukraine and a strong voice for democracy and freedom in the world,” as

NDR

reports.

Kallas: “Danger of wishful thinking” – Putin must be defied

Kallas also noted that one should not rest on the laurels of success and victory over the Soviet Union.

“My people and I observe with a certain concern how little attention is paid to what is currently brewing in the vastness of Russia.” She continued that “from a subjective point of view, it is understandable that the collapse of the Soviet Union creates a kind of feeling of triumph in the West “After the failure of attempts at reform and cooperation with Russia, the danger must be acknowledged.

“However, this attitude has put the West in danger of wishful thinking,” as Der

Spiegel

quotes.

The West must also be self-critical of itself, especially in times of crisis.

“We have to be brutally honest with ourselves – just as Russia is still bombing Ukrainian cities and marching through their towns and villages, we have not kept our promises.” Finally, Kallas asked the guests a question.

One should not think about what Vladimir Putin will do if he loses, but rather what he will do if he wins.

“We should be more worried about what he will do if Russia wins.

Ukraine’s future lies in NATO and the EU.”

According to Kallas, Putin is also dangerous for Estonia and Europe

In his speech, Scholz highlighted the military relations between Estonia and Germany.

“Our soldiers train side by side again and again.

Security in NATO is indivisible.

We are ready to defend every square meter of the alliance's territory.” According to

NDR,

Germany will station a Bundeswehr unit permanently in Lithuania from 2025 in order to be able to defend the alliance's territory against Russia.

In an interview with the

Tagesschau,

the Prime Minister of Estonia once again emphasized her point of view.

When asked how dangerous the Russian president is, especially for Estonia and Europe, the 46-year-old replied: “If we don't do enough to stop him there, it will continue.

With every further step he will become even braver.

We should not forget that.

That’s why we should do everything we can to stop him now.”
