The castle café in Schillingsfürst in Middle Franconia has to close.

A sad end for the family running the business – they would have liked to continue.

Nuremberg – For 30 years, the Schlosscafé in Schillingsfürst, Ansbach district, delighted its customers with great restaurant service, delicious food and the praline-filled hedgehogs for which it is so famous, according to BR.

But that will end on February 29th.

However, this is not due to a lack of customers.

Popular castle café in Middle Franconia has to close because no staff can be found

Not only does the café in Schillingsfürst look back on a successful restaurant history, the building itself also has an exciting historical origin.

The operators proudly write on the castle café’s website: “If our café could talk, it would have a lot to tell.

Because believe it or not, our current restaurant was not just a barracks building, but is even considered to be the origin of the French Foreign Legion (1831).”

But the castle café will soon close its doors forever.

The website simply states: “Our kitchen will be closed from January 1st, 2024.

The café business with cake sales will continue until February 29, 2024.

The vouchers can still be redeemed until then.

Our restaurant will be closed from March 1st, 2024.”

The reason for the end: The operators couldn't find any staff.

According to BR, the personnel problems began with the corona pandemic, but last year the situation really escalated again.

According to the report, there is a lack of ten to 15 people who work in the kitchen, assist as cleaners or work in service.

Operators leave with a bleeding heart - and leave behind a nest

According to the Ortner family website, the decision was not easy for the operators.

Actually, the couple behind the castle café would have liked to continue until they retire, according to BR.

So much time and work was put into the café; the former cowshed at Schillingsfürst Castle was converted into a café before it was officially opened in 1995.

In the end there remains hope for a worthy successor.

According to BR, some regular guests would definitely stay, the Ortner family believes, and their successors could settle in a nest that has been made - there would be a kitchen and bakery with appliances and a comprehensive seating area outside and inside.

So there remains hope for a new castle café chapter in Schillingsfürst.
