Electricity consumption increased by 2.1% last January in Italy compared to 2023 values. According to data from Terna, the company that manages the national transmission network, in January the electricity requirement was equal to 26.7 billion kWh.
There were signs of growth in industrial consumption with energy-intensive companies showing a +3.5% and in the services sector for which the latest available data, relating to the month of November 2023, recorded a positive change of 4.7% compared to in November 2022.
The growth in installed renewable capacity continues: 687 additional MW entered into operation in January 2024, a value 389 MW higher (+131%) compared to the same period of the previous year.
Production from all sources is increasing: +47.7% hydroelectric, +25.5% photovoltaic, +22.8% wind.
The geothermal source is stable, the thermal source is decreasing as a direct consequence of the growth of renewables and imports: -13.6% compared to January 2023. Coal production has collapsed, -85% compared to the same period last year.
Net national electricity production was 21.2 billion kWh.
Renewable sources covered 33.7% of electricity demand (it was 27.7% in January 2023).
