They are environmentally friendly and take you comfortably from one city to the next: the night trains.

There are many direct connections across Europe, especially from Munich.

Munich – It’s everyone’s dream.

Getting on the night train in Munich in the evening and waking up in time for breakfast the next morning at your favorite place of choice.

This environmentally friendly method has become popular again in recent years.

But which stations can actually be explored directly from Munich?

Direct connections from Munich to Italy

In addition to numerous German cities such as Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt am Main and Stuttgart, other countries can also be explored using Deutsche Bahn's night train network.

Italy in particular is very well connected with some direct connections.

If you want to enjoy the Italian sun, you can do so with a direct connection via Verona, Milan and Genoa to La Spezia.

Another train journey takes you via Bologna and Florence to Rome.

There is also a connection starting in Stuttgart and stopping in Munich to Venice.

  • Munich – Milan –

    La Spezia

     (NJ 40295/40235)

  • Munich – Bologna –

    Rome

     (NJ 295/294)

  • Stuttgart – Munich –

    Venice

     (NJ 237/236)

But the south of Italy can also be reached from Munich, albeit a bit tedious.

With the night train to La Spezia, travelers can get off in Milan and take the Italian Intercity Notte 1963 to Palermo.

The journey across the country takes almost 21 hours.

Direct connections from Munich to Eastern Europe and Croatia

Other European countries are also easily accessible from Munich, such as Poland.

A night train goes from Munich via Vienna to Warsaw.

The Hungarian capital Budapest and the Croatian capital Zagreb can also be reached with a direct train from Munich.

Deutsche Bahn no longer operates night trains itself; the “Nightjet” trains, for example, belong to the Austrian ÖBB.

The Hungarian train takes you to Budapest, while the Croatian train goes to Croatia.

Direct connections from Munich to France, Belgium and the Netherlands

The city of love can be reached from Munich by train: a night train takes you directly to the French capital Paris within six hours.

Passengers can also easily reach the Belgian capital Brussels from Munich by night train.

There is a night train from Innsbruck to Amsterdam, which stops in Munich.

  • Vienna – Munich –

    Paris

     (NJ 468/469)

  • Vienna – Munich –

    Brussels

     (NJ 40468/40425)

  • Innsbruck – Munich –

    Amsterdam

     (NJ 421/420)

However, the tickets are not cheap.

It is best to secure your seats on the night trains months in advance.

In the short term, a one-way trip to Paris costs 75 euros, and a place in a sleeping car costs 240 euros.

The whole thing is more affordable if you plan early.

In April you can travel to the city of love in a seated car for just around 55 euros.

The couchette car, which has space for four to six people and breakfast is included, costs around 140 euros.

If you want to make yourself comfortable in the sleeping car with up to three people and enjoy the benefits of your own washing facility, you can expect to pay around 180 euros.

All options can also be booked as a private compartment, but the costs increase accordingly.
