VW is now also getting involved in the electric station wagon segment and is bringing the ID.7 Tourer onto the market.

Can the new electric car save the model series' meager sales figures?

Wolfsburg/Munich - In 2024, Volkswagen will launch the first electric station wagon in its brand history.

Now Germany's largest car manufacturer has presented the VW ID.7 Tourer, as an electric counterpart to the VW Passat.

The spacious middle class is a bestseller in Lower Saxony and has enjoyed great popularity as a company and family vehicle for decades.

Volkswagen only offers the VW Passat as a spacious variant - in contrast to the VW ID.7, which is manufactured and delivered in Emden as a sedan and soon also as a tourer.

Will VW customers accept the new design or will they continue to choose the traditional model, which is now produced in Bratislava (Slovakia)?

If you look at the KBA statistics for new registrations, the VW ID.7 is not nearly as popular as its popular brand brother, which is sold more than ten times as often in this country.

Will that change with the electric ID.7 Tourer?

Externally, the difference to the Passat is not as big as is the case with the electric VW Golf counterpart ID.3 in the compact class.

The first electric station wagon from Wolfsburg will be launched on the market later this year - but it is not yet clear what the VW ID.7 Tourer will cost: The prices are definitely higher than those of the ID.7 sedan - and that is currently going for a proud price 56,995 euros.

What are the differences between the sedan and the ID.7 station wagon?

With an identical length (4.91 meters), the station wagon offers the rear passengers a little more headroom and - and this is probably the biggest plus - the larger trunk: depending on the seating arrangement, the loading volume is between 605 and 1714 liters, which is better than the hatchback -ID.7 by around ten percent.

However, compared to the Passat Variant with a conventional combustion engine (690 to 1920 liters), the electric VW ID.7 Tourer is left behind.

Volkswagen brings the first electric station wagon - ranges of up to 700 km

Meanwhile, the ID.7 Tourer also has an innovation on the drive side: In addition to the 77 kWh battery known from the sedan, the VW station wagon is also available for the first time with an 86 kWh battery, which should enable a range of almost 700 kilometers.

The charging capacity for the battery has also been increased from 175 to 200 kW, so that the further journey does not have to be paid for with longer idle times at the charging station.

The performance of the ID.7 Tourer is 286 hp or 210 kW, and the top speed is limited to 180 km/h.

Rival BMW is also bringing its first electric station wagon onto the market this year, the i5 Touring.

VW shows the ID.7 Tourer electric station wagon: we like the design - but users express criticism

User comments from the Internet show that the design of the VW ID.7 Tourer (2024), which weighs around 2.2 tons, seems to be mostly pleasing.

However, there is criticism of the price list for the upper middle class.

Finally, the (several centimeters shorter) Passat Variant with a combustion engine is available to buy at prices starting at 40,000 euros.

Selection:

  • “Too big and too expensive.

But it looks really chic and now seems sophisticated and well thought out.”

  • “It really is a very nice car.

I really like the fact that the head-up display is standard.”

  • “Why should customers spend 20,000 euros more on a car that ultimately can’t do anything better than the combustion engine?”

  • “The only visually appealing ID model is the ID Buzz.

The other ID vehicles are terrible design mistakes.”

  • “I find the mini speedometer display to take a lot of getting used to.”

  • “At Volkswagen there is no longer any offering for the general public.

Both the format of the cars and the pricing policy are completely out of step with the masses.”

  • “This looks like the first interesting electric car from VW, but given the impressive external dimensions, the trunk size is quite disappointing.”

  • “At least Volkswagen offers a variant with an 86 kWh battery.

That’s more than the completely unacceptable 81 kWh in the BMW i5.”
