At a regional level, in 2022 the lowest percentage of municipal waste disposed of in landfill was achieved by the Campania region with 1.1%, followed by Lombardy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Emilia-Romagna and Trentino-Alto Adige.
All the remaining regions are above the 10% threshold.
In 2022, the highest percentage of separate waste collection was achieved by the Veneto region, with 76.2%, followed by Sardinia, with 75.9%.
This was revealed in the 4th SNPA Environment Report, presented today in Rome.
In Italy, the amount of waste disposed of in landfill is constantly decreasing.
From 63.1% in 2002 it went to 17.8% in 2022. The number of operational landfills is equal to 117 plants: North 50, Center 25 and South 42 plants.
European legislation requires reaching 10% of waste in landfill by 2035.
Compared to the objective of significantly reducing the total quantity of municipal waste produced by 2030, the national situation is essentially stable.
In 2022, the national production of municipal waste stood at 29.1 million tonnes, down 1.8% compared to 2021.
Per capita production also decreases from 502kg/inhabitant to 494kg/inhabitant.
The growth trend of separate waste collection is confirmed also in 2022, with an increase of 1 percentage point at a national level compared to 2021, thus reaching 65%.
Among separated waste, organic waste is confirmed as the most collected fraction in Italy, equal to 38.3% of the total.
In second place paper and cardboard (19.3% of the total), and glass with (12.3% of the total).
