On video: Hanania ben Shimon who neutralized the terrorists in the attack on Highway 1 02.22.24/Shlomi Heller
"Mom took me to my job as a travel security guard, I dozed off in the car and woke up to the sound of a thud," 23-year-old Hanania Ben Shimon says hoarsely.
This morning, Hanania neutralized terrorists in an attack that happened on Route 1, in which Matan Elmaleh was murdered and eight others were injured, including a pregnant woman who was seriously injured.
"I was in Gaza, and I often heard such bursts. I woke up and understood exactly what was happening."
The pained Hanania continues and details with incredible clarity about those seconds.
"I saw to my right the terrorist coming out with an M16 rifle, my mother screamed my name, and I started to 'manoeuvre'. I fired one bullet inside the vehicle to give an initial blow, I regret it a little because it was not very effective. I got out of the vehicle and fired two more Three bullets at the terrorist who had his back to me, I was sure he was already killed. I surrounded him from the left and then I saw another terrorist."

"At this point, another hero joined in, coming out of the vehicles below with his gun, he grabbed a bundle from the other terrorist," Hanania continues to say.
"I thought I could surprise the terrorist, but he spotted him running with the gun, and fired a bunch of shots at him. He must have hit a stop because I managed to return fire, about ten bullets, and he fell. I said to myself, 'This is the end of the incident,' and I sat down in pain. Suddenly I see that one The terrorist who was wounded in the hand, pointed a rifle at me from range 0, I didn't understand how he didn't die. At this point I was already out of bullets in the rifle, but by virtue of my role as a travel security guard I am obliged to walk around with another cartridge. I fired two more bullets and then a policeman arrived who chased him and killed him himself." .
"I feel better, God willing, starting to get used to the atmosphere and the room, to what will accompany me in the coming months," Hanania concludes, while looking exhausted.
"It pains me that I was not able to react even faster and prevent Matan's murder. I wish the rest of the wounded a speedy recovery, and me too because I have treks I still need to do, and I need my leg."
