There cannot be sustainable development without justice between generations and without strong participation of young people in social and political life: two conditions which unfortunately are missing in Italy, according to the Asvis Italian Alliance for sustainable development.

The meeting "justice between generations: from the amendment of the Constitution to practice" took stock of the actions to be undertaken two years after the reform.

These start from allowing remote voting, from the next European and local elections, and from strengthening the civil service.

"It is urgent to introduce regulatory changes, at no cost, to encourage the participation of young people in political life and ensure that the new laws respect the new constitutional principle of intergenerational justice", declared the president of Asvis, Marcella Mallen, underlining the importance of immediately introducing the generational impact assessment (vig) of the new laws, provided for by the draft law for regulatory simplification approved by the Government on 5 December 2023.

According to the new position paper "Democratic youth participation", Italy is in 23rd place in the world ranking of Global Youth Development Index, with strong criticality in the area of political and civic participation: 42% of the 18-34 year old group did not vote in the 2022 political elections, with peaks of 50% among young people in conditions of socioeconomic marginality.

"To prevent young people from being excluded from political and social life - underlines the scientific director of Asvis Enrico Giovannini - politics and society must do everything possible to give young people more confidence and address the causes of their discontent, including the dramatic school dropout in disadvantaged areas and the phenomenon of young NEETs, who do not study or work. Without the active participation of young people, in fact, the country has no future".
