Four wind turbines that were supposed to be built near Sachsenried are not allowed to be built.

The Bundeswehr has objections - and actually raised them years ago.

Sachsenried – The Schwabsoien councilors are stunned.

For a good year and a half now they have been working on the plan to place four wind turbines in the wind energy priority area in the Sachsenried Forest.

In the summer of 2022, they commissioned the expert Wendelin Einsiedler with the planning and leasing rights for the systems; a suitable wind turbine model was already selected last year.

Now the people of Schwabsoien received bad news: the Sachsenried wind turbines are not coming - at least not in the foreseeable future.

The reason for the unexpected cancellation of the project, which was supposed to be implemented on private land with citizen participation, is an objection from the Bundeswehr.

As is well known, it is located in Altenstadt, with its army airfield and airborne/air transport school, just a few kilometers from the planned wind turbine locations.

When asked, Mayor Manfred Schmid said that a final aeronautical investigation showed that the wind turbines were located in the area of the airport that was relevant to flight safety.

With the wind turbines, the risk of accidents would “increase enormously, especially in poor visibility in the approach area to the Altenstadt army airfield”.

Wind turbine rotor blades could be dangerous for skydivers

The key point is the height: If a system is 260 meters high, the tolerance for aircraft on approach is too small, explains Schmid.

When asked, Lieutenant Colonel Martin Holle said that rotor blades near a Bundeswehr airfield could generally be dangerous not only for machines, but also for parachutists.

“They are not only dropped on the pitch, but often far away from it too.”

In fact, the concerns are not new.

As early as 2015, when the Oberland regional plan was updated and Sachsenried was classified as a priority area for wind energy, the Bundeswehr submitted a negative statement on the plans.

The planning association examined and weighed these up, but ultimately rejected them, says Schmid.

This is what the Oberland Region Planning Association says about the wind turbine shutdown in Sachsenried

A decision that was based on the Bundeswehr's consideration at the time of moving the airborne/air transport school from Altenstadt.

If the Bundeswehr location had been relocated, the area in the Sachsenried Forest would have at some point been available as an unrestricted priority area for wind turbines.

Of course nothing came of the move, but this was no longer considered for the wind energy priority area.

The area was nevertheless determined to be a suitable wind power location.

“That should never have happened,” says the Schwabsoien town hall boss angrily.

When asked, the Oberland Region Planning Association stated that they were “neither involved nor informed about the specific system planning” and therefore could not provide any information as to why the problem was only noticed now.

“The regional plan secures suitable locations for wind power.

Whether and how wind turbines are actually built and operated on the areas designated in the regional plan depends on numerous factors,” says the association’s statement.

An approval procedure under emissions control law is required for tall wind turbines.

The respective district administration authority, i.e. the district office, has to take care of this.

“The planning association is therefore not concerned with the specific system approval or specific system planning.”

“It's really a disgrace that this is only coming out now” - local councilors angry about wind power being phased out

Schmid found out about the wind power shutdown in Sachsenried a good two weeks ago.

At the end of the most recent council meeting he addressed it publicly, whereupon the councilors voiced their displeasure.

“It's really a disgrace that this is only coming out now,” complained Christian Stögbauer.

“The priority area has existed for years.” Christoph Obermeier called it a “mess that so much money and time was wasted” before it was clear that the project could not be implemented.

He said the community was in a “fortunate position” because it had the right conditions for wind energy production.

Norbert Schmid simply finds it “sad” that wind turbines are not being built.

“We have acceptance among the population and then we are not allowed.”

Despite the setback, the mayor does not want to completely bury the wind power plans in Sachsenried.

“The project is on hold,” he says.

Because perhaps in the future there will be smaller systems that can generate wind power just as efficiently as the large ones today.
