Poundcake is adopted as a puppy.
Despite his deafness, he quickly feels comfortable.
There's only one thing he's missing for perfect happiness: a friend.
James Coburn actually never wanted a dog.
He was worried that with a four-legged friend he would be mostly housebound and would no longer be able to decide freely and flexibly about his time.
His opinion changed when he came across the photo of Poundcake.
An extremely cute young dog around eight months old who was sitting in an animal shelter in Rhode Island (smallest US state).
But Poundcake had a small drawback: he was born deaf.
James and his wife didn't let that stop them.

A normal life despite the disability
Visual signals are particularly important for deaf dogs.

Restricted, sick or older dogs in particular rarely get a chance to be adopted.
But James submitted his “application” to the animal protection organization and was accepted.
The beginning was a bit difficult - they had to get used to each other.
Communication wasn't always easy either.
Over time, they found common ground and Poundcake thrived.
“We learned to communicate with signs.
He was so happy,” James revealed in an Instagram post.
But something was still missing.
He needed a friend.
Searched and found
“We knew what we had to do.”
The couple adopted a second dog.
James introduces the new addition to the family on Instagram.
“This is milkshake.
She was born deaf, like him, and waited years for a home.”

Even though the two are quite different, they go well together.
“Poundcake thinks he’s a king and Milkshake is still a little scared in her new surroundings.
But the two harmonize very well with each other."
James would like to encourage other people to adopt dogs with restrictions or disabilities.
