After the evacuation of a high-rise building, the residents are temporarily accommodated in the elementary school at Steinpark - a matter of course for principal Sabine Jackermaier.

Freising

- When the city of Freising called primary school principal Sabine Jackermaier on Wednesday afternoon to tell them about the apartment fire on nearby Bourdonstrasse, she already knew about it.

The warning to keep windows and doors closed because of smoke had already been discussed at school.

“We advised students that they should avoid Bourdonstrasse and take a different route home.” The city asked Jackermaier to make the Stadtpark elementary school temporarily available to accommodate residents who had to leave their apartment because of the smoke.

For the principal it was logical for the school to help.

“We were in the right place at the right time.

It was a given that we would help together,” said Jackermaier.

Instead of the gym, the cafeteria was quickly made available.

“It has seating, there are tables in it, it’s simply more suitable.” So Jackermaier went with the caretaker towards the fire site and tried to talk to the operations manager.

Just a few minutes later, the first wave of high-rise residents followed her towards school.

Later more and more came.

Residents on Bourdonstrasse surprised by evacuation in the middle of everyday life

“I didn't count, but I guess there were around 60 to 80 people, young and old, including some children,” she says.

“Some of them only had a bathrobe on and a blanket around them.” Of course, the evacuation of their home surprised the residents, some while showering or sleeping after the night shift.

“I went from table to table and first asked how people were doing and what they needed,” says the rector.

“Everyone seemed grateful that someone was looking after them and that they could sit warm and dry.” But she emphasizes that the school worked more supportively in the background and the BRK and other emergency services had everything under control in a “super structured” manner.

“Everyone really worked together perfectly.

The emergency services were all very helpful and professional,” says the principal.

The exceptional situation for school was over again in the evening

Little by little, citizens were able to return to their homes and the cafeteria was empty by 6 p.m.

Only the residents on the floor where the fire broke out were placed in emergency accommodation by the city as they were unable to return to their apartments that evening.
