Highlights: Galloway cattle are achieving initial success in the Brucker Moos. The aim is to promote species diversity and create new habitats, especially for meadow-nesting birds. The 18 Galloway cattle are part of the extensive farming. This means that an area is cultivated with only a small amount of labor per year. It is hoped that extensive grazing will bring about a positive change in the structures in the project area. The first mapping of vegetation, breeding birds, grasshoppers, dragonflies and cicadas were carried out by the landscape architecture firm Niederlöhner.

The Brucker Moos is intended to become a habitat for endangered species - including 18 Galloway cattle

District - Since May last year, 18 Galloway cattle have been living in the areas in Brucker Moos.

And they seem to be doing a good job.

This was the result of an initial monitoring of the areas on behalf of the Ebersberg district office.

The Brucker Moos is an ecologically particularly relevant area in the Ebersberg district; it has a lot of potential for biodiversity.

Some areas there now belong to the public sector, and an area of 54 hectares is to be created by 2026, which will be extensively farmed.

It is hoped that extensive grazing will bring about a positive change in the structures in the project area.

The aim is to keep trees small by preventing cattle from eating them and to bring more moisture into the areas.

This makes the area more attractive for various animal species, including open-air breeding birds such as the lapwing

Inventory of important animal species and biotopes

“The first year of grazing got off to a very good start,” writes the Ebersberg district office in a press release.

“Mapping selected animal species provides a good basis for accompanying monitoring.”

In the summer of 2023, the first mapping of vegetation, breeding birds, grasshoppers, dragonflies and cicadas were carried out by the landscape architecture firm Niederlöhner from Wasserbug.

The project participants are particularly pleased about some of the animal species observed.

These include the two endangered bird species blackthroats and whinchats.

While the latter could only be seen in migration, evidence of breeding was even documented for the stonechat.

The dragonfly species two-striped spring damsel was also spotted in the Brucker Moos.

The aim now is to determine changes in the vegetation over the next few years through so-called permanent observation areas.
