Ready for the onslaught: Last year, over 114,000 guests visited the indoor swimming pool in the Vitalwelt Schliersee.

More than ever before and almost 25,000 more than predicted in 2007 before the opening.

The indoor swimming pool in the Vitalwelt Schliersee recorded a new record number of visitors last year.

114,000 guests came.

The deficit for the community is unprecedentedly low at less than 100,000 euros.

Schliersee - The times when there was a crisis in the relationship between the community of Schliersee and the operating company Monte Mare and the evil word "separation" appeared on the horizon are apparently over - and in fact a long time ago.

As usual at the beginning of the year, the management of the company, which operates the sauna in the Vitalwelt on its own and the pool on behalf of the municipality, presented the results and economic plan for the Vitaltherme to the municipal council.

Operations manager Achim Stauder and managing director Herbert Doll took over this responsibility.

114,000 visitors in one year - Schliersee had not expected that 15 years ago

It is probably also the circumstances that drove the number of visitors in Schliersee to a record high of 114,000.

After the closure of the facility in Bad Wiessee, “there are only two indoor swimming pools left in the district.

Sad,” said Mayor Franz Schnitzenbaumer (CSU).

Next to Schliersee, this is Holzkirchen, and the swimming pool there is much more expensive for the community.

The northern community paid around a million euros in the 2023 financial year, but can manage this more easily than Schliersee with income from energy marketing.

The deficit there is lower than ever before at 97,000 euros with income of 658,000 euros.

For comparison: Before the pool opened in 2008, a deficit of 185,000 euros was assumed, which, according to Doll, is far below the amount of subsidies that usually flow into pools.

“When it comes to operating cost subsidies, Schliersee is in the lowest place in Germany.” Deficits of 600,000 to 800,000 euros are normal.

And if you look at the current construction costs for pools - well over 20 million euros - it was right to “make the decision that way back then”.

The bathroom is getting old - the community needs to invest

But because the official handover of the keys was 15 years ago, meaning Vitalwelt is celebrating a small anniversary this year, the wear and tear is becoming more and more obvious.

“The traces of aging (...) are also being noticed more and more by bathers,” says the economic plan.

Monte Mare is spending around 110,000 euros this year on maintenance alone.

But that doesn't mean anything has been renewed.

Stauder had also pointed out the need for renovation of the pool in previous years.

There are discussions regarding public funding for this.

Inspecting the green roof for potential damage to the waterproofing is also not a new requirement, nor is the leak on the outdoor terrace of the thermal baths.

This is probably a topic for the local council's budget discussions, which are likely to be exciting this year given the costs of the gym in Neuhaus and other projects.

Municipal politicians will also have to talk about investments in the Vitalwelt building, apart from the indoor swimming pool facility.

Stauder called for the furniture in the catering industry to be renewed (“definitely”).

Doll also brought up the topic of energy prices and, given the currently relatively low gas price, advised the community to “sell it as quickly as possible” and thus secure this price in the longer term.

Per capita income of 5.62 euros

Monte Mare is cautiously planning for 105,000 visitors to the swimming pool this year.

If per capita income remained the same at 5.62 (previous year: 5.31) euros, there would ultimately be a deficit of 175,000 euros.

“We cannot offer more utilization time,” said the operations manager, although there are inquiries from all over the district.

The shortage of skilled workers is another issue.

Fortunately, we were able to maintain the staffing level and thus avoid a reduction in opening times, as happens elsewhere, explained Stauder.

The only word to speak during the unanimous adoption of the economic plan in the local council came from Gerhard Waas (Greens): “We are glad that we have you and that things are going well.” People obviously really love each other under the roof of the Vitalwelt.
