The rejection by parliament of a proposal from Deputy Premier and Transport Minister MatteoSalvini's League party to remove the limit on regional governorsserving no more than two terms will not create a problem within the ruling right-centre coalition, Salvini said on Thursday.
There will be no problem in the majority if the law on the third term of office does not pass in parliament," said Salvini after the Senate's Constitutional Affairs Committee threw out the amendment by 16 votes to four, with Premier Giorgia Meloni's right-wing Brothers of Italy (FDI) party and the centre-rightForza Italia of Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani voting against,along with the main opposition parties.
"The League's position is clear, but we are in a democracy:sometimes our proposals pass and at other times, as in this case, they are rejected because all the others, Forza Italia, FdI, Pd, M5S are against," continued Salvini. "
In my opinion this is a mistake," he added.
Under the existing two-term limit, several governors including the League's extremely popular Veneto Govenor Luca Zaia facehaving to step down at the next regional elections.Meloni
is reported to be against dropping the two-term limitbecause she wants more regions in the hands of representativesof her FdI in order to reflect the fact that it is now thedriving force of the right/centre-right alliance.
