The EU imposes new sanctions on Russia.
The USA is also planning an extensive package of sanctions.
One reason is the death of Alexei Navalny.

After the EU agreed on a new package of sanctions against Russia, Great Britain is now imposing sanctions against the head of the Russian prison camp IK-3, where Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny died.
Vadim Kalinin and five other officers are no longer allowed to enter the UK.
Any property in Great Britain will be frozen, the Foreign Office announced in London.
“Those responsible for Navalny’s brutal treatment should have no illusions: we will hold them to account,” Foreign Secretary David Cameron said.
EU imposes new sanctions on Russia after Navalny's death

Brussels/Washington, DC - The EU is imposing new sanctions on Russia on the second anniversary of the Ukraine war on February 24th.
Representatives of the 27 member states agreed in Brussels to significantly expand the list of people and entities whose assets in the EU must be frozen.
In addition, other companies that contribute to Russia's military and technological strengthening or to the development of its defense and security sector should also be sanctioned.
No more military-use goods and technologies will be allowed to be sold to them from the EU.
The agreement between the representatives of the member states on what is now the 13th package of Russia sanctions must now be formalized in a written procedure, as the Belgian EU Council Presidency announced.
The list of additionally affected people and companies will then be published in the EU Official Journal by the anniversary of the start of the war this Saturday.
The sanctions package is seen as a symbol of the anniversary because it does not contain any new, far-reaching economic sanctions.

German Press Agency,
the new list will contain a total of three-digit numbers of positions.
Listed persons are not only affected by asset freezes.
Business is no longer allowed to be done with them and they are no longer allowed to enter the EU.

The reason is the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
The announcement of the punitive measures is scheduled for Friday (February 23), said White House national security spokesman John Kirby.
The package is intended to hold Russia accountable for the death of the Kremlin critic and for Moscow's actions during the war in Ukraine.
Kirby did not initially provide any details about the planned sanctions.
In a conference call with the press, Kirby said the US was pushing Russia for "full transparency" about how Navalny died in a penal colony.
The prison administration in northern Russia announced on February 16 that Russian President Vladimir Putin's best-known opponent "felt unwell" in the prison camp after a walk and "almost immediately lost consciousness."
US President Joe Biden blamed Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin for the death.
Numerous sanctions against Russia because of the war in Ukraine
The US has already imposed a series of sanctions related to Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
“Whatever story the Russian government wants to tell the world, it is clear that President Putin and his government are responsible for Mr. Navalny’s death,” Kirby said.
The US Embassy in Moscow has sought more information about Navalny's death, "but it is difficult to reach a point where one can rely on what the Russians would say about his death."
