In our series we visit the oldest shops in the Munich district.

Today: the Aurnhammer pharmacy.

She has been supplying Ismaning with medication for 50 years.

Ismaning – There is a huge aquarium in the middle of the room.

The pool contains 1000 liters of sea water.

Nemo peeks out from behind an anemone.

Dori swims along a stone.

There is a black sea urchin on the ground.

No, this is not a zoo.

There are body creams and fragrance oils on the shelves around.

Two women and a man in white coats stand at the counter.

“This is for the children,” says pharmacist Peter Aurnhammer and laughs.

“The older customers also enjoy watching fish.

Like me."

Anna and Peter Aurnhammer are a married couple and pharmacists with heart.

Peter Aurnhammer (54) runs the pharmacy at Bahnhofsstraße 22. His wife Anna runs the Amalienapotheke at Bahnhofsstraße 17. While its product range is very broad, the Amalienapotheke specializes in diabetes and mother-child.

“But we help each other out,” says Aurnhammer.

family business

Aurnhammer met his wife at the German Pharmacist Tennis Championships in Ismaning 18 years ago.

He has been organizing the tournament for over 20 years.

He would recommend that their children Hanna (11) and Vincent (12) study pharmacy, but not necessarily run a pharmacy.

There is a lot of uncertainty in the industry at the moment.

The pharmacy structure is changing.

Things were different for him.

The path to becoming a pharmacist was clear for Peter Aurnhammer.

His parents were pharmacists.

He was just a year old when Ute and Gerold Aurnhammer founded the Schloss-Apotheke on Münchner Straße in Ismaning in 1971.

After his father's death, his mother moved the shop to Bahnhofsstrasse 22.

Initially under the name “Park Pharmacy”.

Peter Aurnhammer helped as a child.

After school he delivered medicine, unpacked boxes or put medicine away.

His favorite subjects at school were the natural sciences: physics, chemistry, biology.

The best prerequisites for the difficult pharmacy course.

His sister Annette, on the other hand, always wanted to become a doctor.

Today her practice is right next door.

His path was predetermined: Peter Aurnhammer's parents were pharmacists.

During his studies, Aurnhammer continued to work in his parents' business.

After graduating, he took over management of the pharmacy on Bahnhofsstrasse in 1998.

A year later, Aurnhammer renamed the store “Apotheke Dr.

Aurnhammer”.

Shortly afterwards he expanded the customer area.

The Ismaning artist Margit Festl made the pharmacy fountain.

You can see the pharmacy’s logo on it – mortar and bowl.

Soon the rooms were too small.

In spring 2007, the pharmacy moved to the former bank building at Bahnhofsstrasse 26. The fountain also moved from the location in front of the old pharmacy.

The team also created an apothecary garden with 20 different medicinal herbs.

“I am the man for everything”

What Aurnhammer loves most about his job is the versatility and the contact with people.

“I’m the man for everything,” he says and laughs.

From purchasing and sales, stock clearance to marketing and personnel.

He helps wherever there is need.

The Aurnhammer couple employs 20 people in both stores.

Christa Ludwig (65) has been working for the Aurnhammer family for 40 years.

She learned her apprenticeship from Peter Aurnhammer's mother.

Christina Schmitz (30) also stayed after her training.

Unfortunately, Aurnhammer has not found a trainee for this year.

He is training to become a pharmaceutical technical assistant (PTA).

Pharmacists and pharmaceutical-commercial clerks (PKA) can complete the months of practical training with him.

Competition is big

The competition is great.

Nobody can compete with an online pharmacy.

Instead, the Aurnhammer team would convince with good advice and service.

The boss is optimistic.

“For me the glass is always half full.” The industry is in transition.

He also sees that as an opportunity.

Aurnhammer also gives lectures at the universities in Munich and Regensburg.

He is press spokesman for the pharmacists' association and a member of the local council in Ismaning.

He speaks out for his profession everywhere.

The political framework needs to improve.

The administrative effort is huge and there are still delivery bottlenecks.

Germany hardly produces any medicines anymore.

“Five percent stock shortages in a pharmacy are okay,” says Aurnhammer.

Just recently a desperate father called the emergency services.

His child had a fever.

He couldn't get the prescription that was issued for him.

After more than two hours, he was able to reach a doctor who prescribed an alternative medication that he had in stock.

Stars as customers

Whether conventional medicine or homeopathy, Aurnhammer recommends the right medication depending on the case.

His motto: “Whoever heals is right.” Even if no study has yet proven that homeopathic remedies have an effect beyond the placebo effect.

“Perhaps research will know more in 30 years.” But if someone feels better today after taking one globule, why not?

Every now and then Aurnhammer has stars in his pharmacy.

DJ Ötzi was already there.

But the most famous star was probably Bonny Tyler, a pop icon from the 80s.

On the way to the airport she took a corona test.

“I never thought,” says Aurnhammer and laughs, “that I would pick Bonny Tyler’s nose.”
