This is what it could look like, the “Zibetholz rescue center” (in the area framed in red): The new fire department building with apartments for rescue workers (top right), below the police station (left) and next to it the BRK (right).

According to city architect Justus Klement, a commercial unit would be conceivable underneath.

Thought games at the meeting of the construction, mobility and environmental committee of the city of Penzberg: Actually looking for a new location for the BRK, the city architect presented his idea for a rescue center for all emergency services organizations on Zibetholzweg on Tuesday.

The reaction to this was muted.

Penzberg – The idea is not new.

A few years ago there were serious considerations about converting the Layritzhalle into a blue light center.

The idea was that the BRK should also move in there alongside the fire department.

However, when a city council majority decided in autumn 2020, at the suggestion of the PM parliamentary group, that the municipal utilities' new energy center should be built in the hall, the matter was off the table.

Later, the plan to create a new rescue station in the area around the hall apparently fell through.

The need of the rescue organizations is great

Meanwhile, the need for rescue organizations is becoming ever greater.

The fire department and BRK in particular urgently need more space.

The need is great, as both the long-time active BRK member Ludwig Schmuck and fire brigade speaker Jack Eberl urgently warned at the meeting.

Actually, the meeting was only supposed to discuss possible locations for a new BRK building.

A number of suggestions were already made last year.

For example on Fischhaberstrasse, near the Layritzhalle, on the site of the former Lidl market or instead of the daycare center on Birkenstrasse.

City planning department proposes new “rescue center”.

As city architect Justus Klement said at the meeting, the BRK, among others, has now examined all options available and rejected some.

This includes the parking area for teachers and museum visitors on Karlstrasse.

Among other things, because there are a lot of school children here who could endanger an emergency vehicle in the event of an emergency.

The property of the former Lidl market at the Grube was sold to private individuals.

And the BRK also excluded a property on Wölflstrasse, which is currently used as a construction site facility for the residential development area west of Birkenstrasse, because of its location in the city.

Another possible location that was examined is between Nonnenwaldstraße and Grube, not far from the Hagebaumarkt on Zibetholzweg - the “favorite” location for the BRK, as Klement said, and then surprised the committee with a daring idea from his department: in a partial area With the current forest area, not only the BRK but also an entire “rescue center” could be created in order to use “synergy effects”.

According to Klement's concept, a new building for the fire department will also be built on the site - including apartments for rescue workers on the upper floor and 14 parking spaces.

According to Klement, there will also be space here for a new police station and a building complex for commercial space.

Taking the step into land-use planning would “make sense,” said the city architect.

However, he admitted that around two hectares of forest would have to be cleared for this project, but that the city lacks compensatory areas for reforestation (we reported).

Carl-Christian Wippermann from the Department for Environmental and Climate Protection also saw this as the biggest obstacle.

The committee members often expressed generally benevolent but nevertheless warning voices about a “Blue Light Center 2.0”, as Armin Jabs (BFP) spontaneously called the project.

Many found it premature to start a development plan process without first clarifying important questions.

“The facts must first be clear,” said Armin Jabs, meaning, among other things, that it was necessary to first inquire about the specific needs of the individual organizations.

In his opinion, a new location on Birkenstrasse, where the daycare containers are currently located, would be the best option for the BRK in order to get to a new building as quickly as possible.

City architect Klement strongly advised against using this space: the city urgently needed to save it.

Not necessarily for the state horticultural show, the realization of which is currently uncertain, but for special projects.

Klement didn't say what those might be.

Statements from the organizations should be obtained

Jack Eberl (FLP) warned to wait for the fire department's location report, which is currently in progress, but to continue working on Klement's idea at the same time.

And Sebastian Fügener (Greens) admitted that such a rescue center would certainly be the “silver bullet” solution.

Initiating something like that carelessly would be “irresponsible” given the city’s financial situation “where everything is being canceled.”

Markus Bocksberger (PM), who chaired the meeting on behalf of Mayor Stefan Korpan, admitted that Klement's proposal was “a brutal quick fix” for all of us.

With Jack Eberl, Ludwig Schmuck and Maria Probst (CSU) voting against, the committee finally agreed to postpone the issue to the next committee meeting in March.

Until then, statements from the BRK and the police as well as the responsible expert for the fire brigade report should be obtained in order to discuss a “Zibetholz rescue center” again on this basis.
