The city of Schongau's measure to narrow Alpspitzstrasse to protect pedestrians worked.

Nevertheless, a one-way street should be designated on a trial basis.

Schongau - The city council and the building committee had already dealt with the issue of traffic calming in Schongauer Alpspitzstrasse numerous times, and now the topic has entered a new round.

The proposal by specialist planner Holger Theisen was tested over a year: structural elements firmly anchored to the road that separate the street from the sidewalk.

It was hoped that this would provide better protection for pedestrians because the sidewalk, which is at street level, can no longer be driven over.

It was also assumed that this would make the street less attractive overall for residents of adjacent streets.

Last but not least, people would like these plastic guide elements to limit speeding drivers and for drivers to take their foot off the accelerator.

Martin Blockhaus from the city's building authority presented the results of the evaluation to the members of the building committee.

What probably worked well: Alpspitzstrasse has become quieter overall.

Around seven percent of vehicles are currently driving there less than in 2022. 680 vehicles were counted driving there every day or up to 70 vehicles an hour.

However, drivers are not traveling slower because of the bottlenecks, but are actually around ten percent faster, as the Blockhaus figures showed.

The measurements in July 2022 showed an average speed of 29 kilometers per hour in the 30 zone, in February 2024 this was 32 kilometers per hour.

According to the principles of municipal traffic monitoring, there is no need to react to this yet, says Blockhaus.

The final conclusion of the building authority: “The guiding elements are a good solution to protect pedestrians; a permanent solution should be sought as part of renovation measures.”

Alexander Majaru (SPD) questioned whether a one-way regulation could also be effective.

“Anything is possible,” said Blockhaus, but he recalled that the decision from June 2022 to turn the northern Baumrißstrasse between Tränkhaldenweg and Alpsitzstrasse into a one-way street on a trial basis had been withdrawn due to protests from other residents.

“In the end it should work for the residents”

“It feels like we drive a lot faster there,” said Nina Konstantin (ALS).

She observed that drivers accelerate even more when the road is clear.

“We have streets in Schongau with more serious exceedances,” noted Blockhaus.

City architect Sebastian Dietrich reminded that a one-way street only shifts traffic to adjacent streets.

“But I still think it’s dangerous for pedestrians, we should try something else,” said Konstantin, promoting a temporary one-way street experiment to calm traffic.

This was also advocated by Stephan Hild (UWV), who recalled that this was the specialist planner's second solution.

“There won't be a perfect solution, but in the end it should work for the residents.” It was agreed that a possible solution would be coordinated with the police as soon as possible.

Elisabeth Malzer summed it up on behalf of the citizens of Alpspitzstrasse: “We have been suffering from this situation for years.

The residents no longer let their children out on the street - we now want a different regulation." They favor a restricted one-way street - no matter which direction.

She called for the city to act quickly instead of postponing the decision again and thus spending more money.

Gregor Schuppe (ALS), who was sitting on the spectator bench, pointed out that it was mainly residents of Forchet V who used the street as a shortcut.

“Alpspitzstraße was not built as a thoroughfare: the cars are too fast and there are too many - that has to change.” The building committee members voted unanimously that possible variants for a time-limited one-way street should be available by the next meeting. Regulation.

The temporary structures on Alpspitzstrasse will remain, but will be replaced by structural measures in the long term.
