Berlin – The payment card for asylum seekers is already dividing opinions long before it is introduced.

Some see it as an effective model for reducing so-called pull factors.

Others criticize the model as discriminatory towards refugees.

However, there is agreement that the payment card should come.

However, the question of implementation is causing disputes within the traffic light coalition.

The CDU and CSU have therefore requested a current lesson on the subject of payment cards for Thursday (February 22nd).

“Blockade within the federal government”: Bundestag debates payment card for asylum seekers

“The Greens do not want to reduce the pull factors of illegal migration, but rather maintain them,” said CSU regional group leader Alexander Dobrindt at the beginning of the week.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz must therefore speak out.

Hesse's Prime Minister Boris Rhein (CDU) also called on the Chancellor to act at the weekend.

The Union faction probably wants to further increase the pressure on the government in the current hour on Thursday.

A one-hour discussion is planned from 3:10 p.m. under the title “Introduce payment cards now in a legally secure manner – end the blockade within the federal government”.

The core of the debate revolves around the question of whether or not a change in the legal basis is necessary to implement the payment card.

The SPD and FDP believe a change is necessary.

“We must now provide the federal states with legal certainty when it comes to payment cards,” demanded Dirk Wiese, deputy chairman of the SPD parliamentary group in the

This has been discussed in the coalition and has also been represented by the Chancellery for months,” Mihalic continued.

The FDP saw the Greens' position as a blockade.

Bundestag Vice President Wolfgang Kubicki (FDP) even threatened to break up the traffic light coalition if the Greens did not give in.

Payment card for refugees – Lots of leeway for the states when it comes to implementation

At the beginning of February, 14 of the 16 federal states agreed on a joint tender for a payment card.

In the future, asylum seekers in Germany will no longer receive cash payments, but will instead receive credit on a debit card.

The participating countries had agreed on minimum standards for the card.

The amount of cash withdrawals and the exclusion of certain product groups - such as tobacco or alcohol - should then be at the discretion of the countries.

Bavaria and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have decided on a special path.
